About our thermal roof survey in Southsea
On a flat roof, wet insulation holds heat longer than dry insulation. That means a wet area can show up as a different temperature from the rest of the roof. This can give an idea of how far water has travelled beneath the membrane, something you can’t usually tell from the surface. Moisture readings are then used to check what the camera suggests. If you’re worried about possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering and ceilings that feel colder in places, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
For a town like Southsea, every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map, which shows restriction zones around airports and prisons. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning every flight. Flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight, as the open category requires.
Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

For landlords and managing agents
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out with the most urgent first where relevant, which helps when budgeting.
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.
How we price thermal roof surveys
All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Basic, Standard or Premium
- Roof area
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, from £400 with VAT included. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.
Booking your survey
We’ll normally ask about:
- What made you get in touch
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
Our phone lines are open seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. For a price or to book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Before and after the survey
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
Once we’ve been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. Each image is explained in plain words, alongside what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day.
Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water doesn’t sit on the roof. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
How the survey works
The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. In total, it takes an hour or two for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. A survey in Southsea needs access inside and out, including the loft hatch and any rooms with damp. If there is a side gate or a rear garden, let us know how to reach it. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Preparing for the visit
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
Book a survey
Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the details.

Honest limits
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Bear these in mind:
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
- Confirming water without moisture readings
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.
What we check
- Flat roofs
- Commercial roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Insulated roof spaces
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Southsea
Southsea is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind off the sea can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
Take an older house close to St Margaret of Scotland: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Take a building like Craneswater Junior School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Southsea, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition.
Southsea is about 2 miles south of Portsmouth, in Portsmouth. Surveys in Southsea work the same way as everywhere we cover: a proper look at whatever is safely visible, photographs and a clear written report. Across Portsmouth, we cover Southsea.

What we look for on each type of roof
Loft insulation
Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. The camera can show where it no longer covers the ceiling.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Thermal images of a pitched roof can still show heat loss patterns and some damp areas. The report explains what the images can tell you and what they can’t.
Southsea: your questions answered
Is Southsea in the area you cover?
Yes. We work right across London and South East England, and Southsea is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Southsea?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Visible signs like deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. We explain what the images can and can’t tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?
Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only if it is safe. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
