Tips from our surveys

You do not need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:

  • Heat the home normally on the days before
  • Talk to us about the weather when booking
  • Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
  • Keep a record of when stains appear

The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.

Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof in suitable weather.

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Streatham Hill

We present each thermal image next to a normal photo of the same area, making it clear where on the roof each pattern is. We explain what each pattern may mean, what the moisture readings found and what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day. If you have questions, the in-person consultation gives you time to go through them. There is a 12-month follow-up as well. We are often asked to look into stains that keep coming back and leaks that are hard to trace, across loft conversions, ceilings below the roof and insulated roof spaces.

In London’s terraces and conversions, roofs are packed close together, which makes care around neighbours part of the job. We take care to focus on the roof we’ve been asked to look at. Mention access, height and anything unusual about the building when booking. Steep slopes, tall chimneys and rear additions are where the extra view helps most.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

The survey, step by step

Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photos, sent to you by email. On timing, most surveys take an hour or two at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a London conversion, the way into the roof space is frequently from a communal landing or the top flat. If that applies to your building, it is useful to agree access with the neighbours or the managing agent first. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.

  1. We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
  2. We look at the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it is safe.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
  5. The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.

Before we arrive

  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property

Thermal roof surveys around Streatham Hill

With Kingswood House about 1.9 miles east, Streatham Hill sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Streatham Hill is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea. If the drone is used for your survey, the exact boundary is checked for the address first.

Shop and office owners around Southside Wandsworth may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. The streets around a church such as Church of St Margaret are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Streatham Hill is about 2 miles south of Stockwell, in Greater London. We visit Streatham Hill as part of our work across Greater London, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. Across Greater London, we cover Streatham Hill.

What you can safely check yourself

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Streatham Hill?

Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, especially when it’s warm inside and cold outside.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
  • Gaps in loft insulation
  • Damp that repairs haven’t cured
  • Cold areas below the roof

Parking in Streatham Hill, as in most of London, takes a little planning: a visitor permit or a nearby bay makes the day easier.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • Is VAT included in the price?

What’s in a roof survey

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:

  • Height and safe access
  • Roof area
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages

For a price for your roof in Streatham Hill, call 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Booking your survey

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Anything about access we should know
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block

Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. Otherwise, simply ring 07833 053749 or email us whenever suits you.

How the survey changes by roof type

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

Because these membranes are thin, patterns from below often show. Reflections from shiny surfaces can affect readings, which we allow for.

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Even on pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp. We explain what can and cannot be read from them.

Common questions in Streatham Hill

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Streatham Hill?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Streatham Hill?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Streatham Hill is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, and the rest of the survey doesn’t depend on the drone.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it does not include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.

How many surveys have you done?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. We look from the loft as well, where there is safe access.

Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?

It can be useful, though pitched roofs are usually harder to read. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we also look from the loft where it is safe.
