Teddington Thermal Roof Survey
Thermal imaging to find moisture and heat loss patterns in a roof for Teddington and the rest of Greater London. Surveys run seven days a week.
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
Tips that help
Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:
- Leave the roof to people with safe access
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
- Make sure the loft can be reached safely
We note the weather and surface conditions, and how they may have affected the results. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.
Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.
Thermal roof survey in Teddington
Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. The camera does not see water itself, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. If you are worried about heat escaping through the roof and damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on ceilings below the roof, insulated roof spaces and loft conversions alike.
Flying in London takes more checking than most places: there are flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every address in Teddington is checked before any drone flight, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.
It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

What we cannot see
We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

How it works
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a photo-illustrated written report. As for time on site, most surveys take between one and two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. In Teddington, as in much of London, a good many properties are flats or terraces without side access, so the back of the roof is often seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, let us know as you book.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Before the survey
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached

Advice
Why act early in Teddington
Once insulation under a membrane is wet, it tends to stay wet. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. In Teddington, as across London, an overflowing gutter soaks the wall below. A blocked outlet ignored for a winter or two can mean damp walls inside.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 inc. VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
Why choose Independent Roof Survey in Teddington

What we look for on each type of roof
Pitched slate and tile roofs
On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s happening underneath. We combine the images with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
On larger commercial single-ply roofs, thermal imaging can help target moisture readings. It focuses the survey on the areas that matter.
Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Teddington
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Teddington?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.
Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Teddington?
It rarely stops a survey, but it’s worth planning. Tell us what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when you book.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report, and it doesn’t include calculations. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed.
What will the report tell me?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, finishing with recommendations. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
The camera can point to heat loss and gaps in insulation. The survey isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the images show where improvements may help.
Thermal roof surveys in Teddington: local notes
If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Outer London has lots of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, frequently with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.
If you live in an older home near Christ Church, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps. For a London address like Teddington, it’s useful to know about controlled parking before the day, along with any off-street space. Historic houses such as Strawberry Hill House, about 0.8 miles north, show how far back building around Teddington goes. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.
