Drone roof survey in Teddington: what you get
A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. We keep the camera on the roof we’re surveying, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it’s worth letting them know about the visit. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. If you are worried about tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack and moss and weeds taking hold up top, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
London airspace is busy and tightly controlled: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Before a drone goes up in Teddington, the address is checked against all of them, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly.

Leave it or get it looked at?
On a tall building, problems are often found only when water comes in. By that stage the damage has spread inside. A drone survey finds them sooner. In Teddington, as in much of London, water from a roof defect can reach a neighbour’s home as easily as yours: failed flashings and blocked valley gutters can send water into more than one home. Finding it early keeps the work smaller.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, from £400 with VAT included. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Useful tips for Teddington property owners
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
- Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
- Let us know the exact address when booking
- Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
Keep the photos with your property records. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys, and they help if you sell.
Look at the roof from the ground after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone can show exactly what has moved.
Signs you need a drone roof survey in Teddington
Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below
- Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
Historic houses such as Strawberry Hill House, about 0.8 miles north, show how far back building around Teddington goes. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What the survey won’t cover
- When you will get the report
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
When you need someone else
In fairness, a roof survey has limits:
- Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
- Close-up photos of next door’s property
- A structural engineer’s report

What we look at
- Fragile roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
Different roofs, different checks
Valleys and parapet gutters
Blocked outlets in hidden gutters cause many leaks. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Felt frequently lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. Photos show how the covering is wearing.
Teddington: your questions answered
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Teddington?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Are there drone restrictions around Teddington?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
Can you survey in bad weather?
A survey can typically go ahead in light rain, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Strong wind or a downpour can stop drone flights and make roof access unsafe, so we will agree a new date if the weather isn’t suitable.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.
Flying and imaging in Teddington
Teddington has a number of hotels within about a mile and a half. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight.
If you live in an older home near Christ Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Teddington means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it pays to find faults before guests do.

How it works
On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, from ground level, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where applicable. Most surveys take about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In Teddington, as in much of London, plenty of properties are flats or terraces without side access, so rear slopes are viewed from windows, the loft or, where a flight is allowed, by drone. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, tell us when you book.
- First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
- We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
- We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
