Independent thermal roof surveys in Test Valley

What we’re asked to look at in Test Valley

People often book a thermal survey when a damp patch has no obvious cause. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
  • Patches of heat loss across the roof
  • Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
  • Damp around chimneys and parapets

The streets around a church such as Church of St James are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

What to expect from a roof survey

How a thermal roof survey works in Test Valley

A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp is not obvious. Leaks often run along a roof before they appear on a ceiling, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings don’t rely on the camera alone. If you are worried about areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and leaks that are hard to trace, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

In a village or hamlet like Test Valley, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Test Valley

Will you come out to Test Valley?

Yes. Test Valley is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Test Valley?

Yes, Test Valley is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details.

Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.

Does the report include photos?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we’re not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

What’s the best way to book?

Simply call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.

What we can’t see

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
  • Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.

The survey, step by step

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Older rural homes like those around Test Valley can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
  2. We look at the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it is safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
  4. Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
  5. We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
