Thermal imaging roof survey in Waterloo, Greater London
Not sure what state the roof is in? You can book a thermal roof survey in Waterloo and across Greater London, with plain-English findings.
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
- Leaks that are hard to trace
Different roofs, different checks
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Built-up felt and asphalt roofs can hide trapped water for a long time. The camera can give clues to where it is sitting, when the conditions allow.
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Problems where roof slopes and walls meet are frequently hidden. We combine a close visual check with the thermal images.
How a thermal roof survey works in Waterloo
A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves often show up as temperature differences. The difference shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. Common reasons to book are wet areas near outlets and upstands and patches of heat loss across the roof, on flat roofs, loft conversions and pitched roof slopes.
Many London roofs are hidden from the pavement: butterfly roofs behind parapets, dormer tops and flat roofs over back additions. Drone photos and thermal images can show parts of a roof that are hard to reach safely. The weather decides the day: both drones and thermal cameras need the right conditions. Thermal images show surface temperature, not water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings.
Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Can I check my roof myself?
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Thermal roof surveys in Waterloo: local notes
Close to the centre of London, a great many houses are Victorian or Edwardian terraces, many of them roofed in Welsh slate. From the street you may see only a parapet, with a butterfly roof and a valley gutter behind it draining to the back. In a house like that, shared stacks, party-wall upstands and lead flashings all need looking at as far as they can be seen. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from the ground, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Waterloo is about 2 miles from the restricted area over the City of London, where drone flights need permission from NATS. If your survey includes the drone, the address is checked against it before any flight.
A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Waterloo means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it pays to find faults before guests do. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Oasis Academy Johanna, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Waterloo
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Waterloo?
Sometimes, yes. Where there are permit zones, a visitor permit or nearby pay-and-display bay works well.
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Waterloo?
Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Waterloo is about 2 miles from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. Waterloo is about 2 miles from the restricted area over the City of London, where drone flights need permission from NATS. We check whether the address falls inside it, and if it does we apply for permission, which isn’t always given. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying, and the rest of the survey does not depend on the drone.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it does not include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.
Do I need to be at home?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We’ll talk about access when booking.
Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?
It is a useful tool for tracing leaks, but not the only one. The results depend on conditions on the day. If the source can’t be confirmed, we’ll say what could help next, such as electronic leak detection.
How long does the survey take?
Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. The written report follows by email.
Will the camera show exactly where the water is?
Not directly. It shows surface temperature, and wet areas can show up because they hold heat differently. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.

When you need someone else
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- The condition of timbers we can’t see

- Commercial roofs
- Loft conversions
Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Waterloo
Not every roof problem shows on the surface. Trapped moisture, missing insulation and hidden heat loss are three examples. A thermal camera adds another way of finding them.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
If you run a business near Gabriel's Wharf, big, flat commercial roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images help most.
Questions to ask before booking
- How soon the report will arrive
- Is VAT included in the price?
- Their track record with similar roofs
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
The survey, step by step
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is often on a shared landing. If that applies to your building, it helps to agree access with the neighbours or the managing agent first. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Preparing for the visit
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Note where any stains or damp appear
