About our thermal roof survey in Whitwell
Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. You also get a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a report on the same day. An in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up are included too. You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size. We survey pitched roof slopes, loft conversions and ceilings below the roof, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering and water getting in at parapets and stacks.
In a village or hamlet like Whitwell, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

FAQs for Whitwell
Do you cover Whitwell?
Yes, Whitwell is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How do I find out if my home in Whitwell is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
Are you insured?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible.
What’s in the report?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photographs. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We note visible signs like sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
How it works
The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. In total, it takes an hour or two for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Somewhere like Whitwell needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
Before the survey
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Leave side gates unlocked

Advice
What we cannot see
Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:
- An energy rating for the building
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.
What we check
- Loft conversions
- Pitched roof slopes
- Insulated roof spaces
- Flat roofs
- Commercial roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
Checking the roof from the ground
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when booking and it will help the survey.
Common roof problems in Whitwell
Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. A leak may start well away from where the stain appears. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.
Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
Take a building like Niton Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
- What happens after the report arrives
- Their report turnaround times
Thermal roof surveys in Whitwell: local notes
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Whitwell. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
The streets around a church such as Church of St. Mary and St. Radegund are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Sheat Manor lies about 4.4 miles north, so building around Whitwell goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself.
Whitwell is about 7 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. We visit Whitwell as part of our work across the Isle of Wight, for homes and businesses alike. Whitwell is one of the places in the Isle of Wight we cover. We also survey roofs in Portsmouth.

What we look for on each type of roof
GRP fibreglass roofs
GRP surfaces can be shiny, which affects thermal readings. We take that into account and check findings with moisture readings.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Felt and asphalt roofs often show wet areas as patches that differ from the rest. We check those patches with moisture readings.
