Thermal roof surveys near World's End

Why get it checked now?

Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so you know where to put things right. London’s older roofs often have bitumen felt underlay or none at all, so a slipped slate can soon mean water inside. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.

Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, including VAT, and we can help you choose.

Thermal roof survey in World's End

A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp is not obvious. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and the camera can show patterns that help us follow it. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings don’t rely on the camera alone. We survey commercial roofs, loft conversions and flat roofs, and people most often book us about thin or uneven insulation in the roof and wet insulation beneath the membrane.

London’s roofs are frequently hard to see from the street: valley gutters behind parapets, dormers and flat-roofed rear additions. That’s where a view from the air or a thermal camera helps, by showing what cannot be reached safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in World's End as anywhere. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.

We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

World's End: your questions answered

How do I find out if my home in World's End is listed?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Are there drone restrictions around World's End?

Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. The flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea covers World's End, or comes right up to its edge. Before any flight there, we ask the heliport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it is given. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and the rest of the survey does not depend on the drone.

Will I get photos?

Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to.

Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?

It can help, but the results are frequently less clear than on a flat roof. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we also look from the loft where it’s safe.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Differences can suggest wet areas, missing insulation or heat loss, and we check them with moisture readings.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.

Tips from our surveys

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Check outlets after heavy rain
  • Keep the report to compare against after any repair
  • Leave the roof to people with safe access
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch

If you’re buying, the report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. What you do with it is up to you, whether you ask for work before completion or discuss the price.

Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.

Drones, thermal imaging and World's End roofs

The flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea covers World's End, or comes right up to its edge. If your survey includes the drone, permission from the heliport is needed first, and the flight only goes ahead if it is given. The wider area around World's End has a long history of building, with Carlyle's House about 0.5 miles east. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters.

For hotels and guest houses around World's End, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it pays to find faults before guests do. Controlled parking zones are common in London, so mention any permit rules for World's End, along with any off-street space. Shop and office owners around Kensington Arcade may find that thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

How the survey works

There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes an hour or two for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is often on a shared landing. Where that’s the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Otherwise, the visit in World's End runs like any other.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Loft insulation

Heat loss shows most clearly when it is warm inside and colder outside. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

Because these membranes are thin, patterns from below often show. Reflections from shiny surfaces can affect readings, which we allow for.
