Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Shepperton
A leaning chimney stack is worth having looked at. A stack may lean because the mortar on one side has weakened, which can happen over many years of use. The survey notes how the stack looks, how far it seems to lean and the state of the bricks and joints. Where it may be a structural concern, we’ll recommend a structural engineer. If you are worried about eroded joints in the brickwork and cracked or missing flaunching, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a smaller place like Shepperton, some roofs stand more exposed to wind and rain than in a built-up town. Ridge tiles, verges, chimney stacks and flashings take the worst of it. A careful look shows whether anything has started to loosen. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.
Where we cannot see part of the chimney stack, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

FAQs for Shepperton
Is Shepperton within the area you cover?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
How do I find out if my home in Shepperton is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
What insurance do you have?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.
Do you need to go on the roof to check the chimney?
We inspect from wherever is safe: the ground, nearby windows and higher points, and the roof space. Our Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where it applies. If part of a stack cannot be seen, the report says so.
How do I book a survey in Shepperton?
Simply call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.
What will the report tell me?
A photo-illustrated written report, explaining the condition of the chimney stack, any defects and our recommendations, with the most urgent first where relevant. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
What affects the price in Shepperton
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. This is what makes a difference:
- House, block, shop or office
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details. We will confirm the figure before booking.
Helping us price your survey
You do not need to know any roofing terms. It is enough to tell us:
- What made you get in touch
- The property’s address and postcode
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Your timetable, like an exchange date
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from ground level or a window, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To get started, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
How the survey works
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photos, sent to you by email. On timing, most surveys take between one and two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. Parking around Shepperton is typically easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where applicable.
- First we talk through the stacks, their history and any problems.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- We look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft space.
- The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.
Preparing for the visit
- Keep pets in another room
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work with less disruption.
Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.
When to book a survey in Shepperton
TV aerials, satellite dishes and their brackets are frequently fixed to chimneys. The extra load in wind can work bricks and joints loose. We check fixings on the stack as part of the survey.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- A stack that appears to lean
- Flashings pulling away from the stack
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
- Pots or cowls that look unsafe
Homes near green spaces such as Sunbury Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn.
What to check before booking
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- What insurance they carry
- Is VAT included in the price?
- How long the report takes to arrive
Can I check my roof myself?
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
Shepperton homes and their roofs
The Homewood, about 3.8 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Shepperton. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Many older homes in Surrey have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls. Some old buildings in Surrey and Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
Anyone responsible for a site like Thamesmead School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. If you let a flat or house near Shepperton station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

What a chimney survey doesn’t cover
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- Whether the flue is safe to use
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Parts of the stack that cannot be seen safely or belong to a neighbour we can’t access
