About our drone roof survey in Greengate
Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If permission isn’t given, we inspect by other means and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and people most frequently book us about wind damage high on the roof and debris building up in hidden gutters.
London’s roofs are often hard to see from the street: valley gutters behind parapets, dormers and flat-roofed rear additions. Drone photos and thermal images can show parts of a roof that are hard to reach safely. The weather decides the day: both drones and thermal cameras need the right conditions. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Greengate?
Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. We fly from ground level and bring the camera close to the roof.
Typical things we’re asked to look at include:
- Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
- Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
- Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
The streets around a church such as St Andrew's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What exactly goes into their report
- Is VAT included in the price?
- What happens after the report arrives
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
For landlords and managing agents
Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, putting the urgent items at the top.
FAQs for Greengate
Is parking a problem for a survey in Greengate?
Normally it is manageable with a little notice. Tell us what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.
Is drone flying allowed in Greengate?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Greengate is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around London City Airport. Before any flight there, we ask the airport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it’s given. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and details are available on request.
How soon will I get the report?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
How much is a survey?
Our price is from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before you book, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. To get a price, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to.

Checking the roof from the ground
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
The survey, step by step
On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, from the ground, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where applicable. Most surveys take between one and two hours for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so a visit in Greengate moves between viewpoints: the pavement, upstairs windows, the loft and any safe spot at the back. If other people live in the building, tell us who can let us into the shared parts.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.
Before we arrive
