When to book a survey in Holloway

Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Older slates and tiles break easily, and fragile sheet roofs are dangerous to walk on. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

A survey can pick up problems like:

  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Debris building up in hidden gutters
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Burchetts Green CofE Infants' School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • What experience they bring
  • When you’ll get the report
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance

What’s in a roof survey

How a drone roof survey works in Holloway

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. A drone inspection, where it applies, is also part of our Premium Survey, with a same-day report, structural analysis and an in-person consultation. It also includes a follow-up after 12 months. If a drone will not help on your roof, we will say so. Every drone survey comes with a written report and close-up photographs. We survey chimney stacks, tall and steep roofs and fragile roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are ponding and splits on a high flat roof and debris building up in hidden gutters.

In a village or hamlet like Holloway, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Tips from our surveys

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Let us know about any leaks or concerns
  • Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns

We email the report to you, with close-up photographs from the flight. Findings are set out in plain English, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

Keep the roof space ventilated. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

Holloway: your questions answered

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Holloway?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Will you come out to Holloway?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.

Are you registered with the CAA?

Yes. We hold both a CAA Flyer ID and an Operator ID. The drone we use weighs under 250g.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We check the roof, not the whole building, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

Does the report include photos?

Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.

Can you survey a roof inside a flight restriction zone?

Sometimes, with permission. Airports such as Gatwick, Luton and Southampton have flight restriction zones, where the airport or air traffic control must give permission first. If permission is not given, the roof is inspected from other safe viewpoints.

What does a roof survey cost?

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your roof before booking, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Drones, thermal imaging and Holloway roofs

White Waltham Airfield is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. With Harleyford Manor about 2.7 miles north-west, Holloway sits in an area with a long building history. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

For an older house near a landmark like Saint John the Evangelist, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Roof by roof

Ridges and hips

Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. A drone shows cracked mortar and loose ridge tiles.

Chimney stacks

Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. Each defect is photographed for the report.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What happens on the day

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit normally takes an hour or two on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. For a village or hamlet like Holloway, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Preparing for the visit
