Independent drone roof surveys in Pyle Hill

How a drone roof survey works in Pyle Hill

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight isn’t possible, we explain why. If you’ve noticed slates or tiles shifted by high winds and cracked mortar along the ridge, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and valleys and parapet gutters alike.

Somewhere as small as Pyle Hill, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned in advance. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Chimney tops are hard to see from the ground. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.

Large commercial roofs

Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We do not test for it, but we flag it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

What a survey costs

All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • The size of the roof
  • Which survey package you book
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight

All our prices include VAT. Our price is from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for your roof before you book.

Helping us price your survey

Getting the details right at the start saves time. It is useful to include:

  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • What made you get in touch

We survey roofs on weekdays and at weekends. To arrange a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Pyle Hill: your questions answered

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Pyle Hill?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Do you cover smaller places like Pyle Hill?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Will the drone show what’s under the tiles?

No. The drone sees the roof from outside only. The loft space is checked separately, where there’s safe access, as damp and daylight often show there first.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

Do you hold CAA registration for the drone?

Yes. We hold both a CAA Flyer ID and an Operator ID. The drone we use weighs under 250g.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

How much is a survey?

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package.

Checking the roof from ground level

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry.

Flying and imaging in Pyle Hill

Many older homes in Surrey have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help. About 3.7 miles south lies Guildford Castle, a reminder of how long the area around Pyle Hill has been built on. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near The Peacocks, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. Take a building like Hoe Valley School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

The survey, step by step

On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. After that, we check everything we can see safely, from the ground, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where applicable. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Somewhere as small as Pyle Hill, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Advice

What this survey cannot tell you

We only report what can safely be seen on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters

What we’re asked to look at in Pyle Hill

Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. We fly from the ground and bring the camera close to the roof.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Hidden gutters full of leaves
  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Wind damage high on the roof
  • Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below

If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near All Souls' Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Choosing a roof surveyor
