Drone roof survey in The Hale: what you get
Drones need reasonable weather. High wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. Common reasons to book are cracked mortar along the ridge and moss building up on slopes and in gutters, across valleys and parapet gutters, fragile roofs and tall and steep roofs.
London’s roofs are often hard to see from the street: butterfly roofs behind parapets, dormer tops and flat roofs over back additions. That is where a view from the air or a thermal camera helps, by showing what cannot be reached safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in The Hale as anywhere. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.
You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

DIY checks: what’s safe
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Why act early in The Hale
Photographing a roof from the air does not touch it. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so you see the roof exactly as it is. In The Hale, as in much of London, water from a roof defect can reach a neighbour’s home as easily as yours: a blocked parapet gutter or slipped slate can let water into the flat below or the house next door. Finding it early keeps the work smaller.

Different roofs, different checks
Steep slate and tile slopes
Walking on fragile coverings can break them. The drone sees them without touching them.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Flat roof coverings wear out at different rates. Photos show how the covering is wearing.

How it works
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect what can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey normally takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Surveys in The Hale can be booked for any day of the week. It helps if you can point us to a visitor permit or a nearby bay, and to clear a path to the loft hatch. A back bedroom window can be the best vantage point for a rear addition, so we may ask to use one.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
- We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.
How to prepare
- Check the loft hatch can be reached
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

The Hale questions
Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in The Hale?
London parking needs a little planning, so let us know about permits, bays or a driveway as you book. That way the visit can be planned around it.
Is drone flying allowed in The Hale?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
How much does a drone roof survey cost in The Hale?
Prices start from £400, including VAT. You’ll know the price for the job before booking. For a price, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
How many surveys have you done?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
What a drone roof survey does not cover
Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey will not do:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Airspace, weather and The Hale roofs
Alongside Victorian and Edwardian terraces, outer London has a great many interwar semis, frequently with hipped roofs of clay or concrete tiles. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight.
The streets around a church like John Keble Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Headstone Manor, about 4.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around The Hale. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

When to book a survey in The Hale
Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Debris collects where nobody looks, until it causes a leak inside. A drone shows them clearly from above.
Look out for signs like these:
- Wind damage high on the roof
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
- Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
- Chimney tops in poor condition
Take a building like Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
