Roof by roof

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. We record the signs of age we can see.

Valleys and parapet gutters

A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. It’s almost impossible to see from the ground, but it is plain to see from the air.

How a drone roof survey works in Upper Eddington

We carry out drone roof surveys in Upper Eddington and across London and South East England, subject to airspace checks and the weather. We fly on weekdays and at weekends. We check the airspace for your address before booking a flight. The report includes the drone photos and our recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, call 07833 053749 or email us with the address. If you’ve noticed slipped or missing slates on a high roof and plant growth and moss on the roof, we can find out what’s behind it.

Somewhere as small as Upper Eddington, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Weather and airspace are looked at ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned in advance. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Common questions in Upper Eddington

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Upper Eddington?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Do you cover smaller places like Upper Eddington?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

When does the report arrive?

Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

How long is the visit?

Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. The report follows by email.

What do I do with the report?

You receive the written report by email, with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.

For landlords and managing agents

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it as you book and we will plan the survey around it.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. We survey seven days a week, which can make access easier.

What we cannot see

It is useful to know what a survey won’t do before you book:

  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will recommend the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

What we look at

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs

The survey, step by step

You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Older roofs in small places like Upper Eddington can have low, tight loft spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Before the survey

  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Arrange a survey

To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and what you’d like to know about the roof. We will confirm the price before you book.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Upper Eddington

An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

If you look after a building such as Hungerford Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Upper Eddington?

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Older slates and tiles break easily, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top

For an older house near a landmark such as Hungerford Methodist Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
