Drone roof survey in Eddington, West Berkshire
A careful look at the roof at your property in Eddington, and put it all in a written report with photos.
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
- Loose ridge and hip tiles
About our drone roof survey in Eddington
Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. We check the airspace for your address before the visit. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. If you are worried about plant growth and moss on the roof and debris building up in hidden gutters, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on large and complex roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs alike.
Some older homes in villages like Eddington are listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager does not touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What we’re asked to look at in Eddington
Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.
We are frequently asked to look at:
- Outlets choked with leaves and silt
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Standing water on a flat roof
- Ridge and hip pieces working loose
Take a building like Hungerford Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
What to check before booking
- When you’ll get the report
- Their track record with similar roofs
- Whether you get a written report with photos
- What they won’t be able to tell you

Before and after the survey
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Let us know what you want to see
- Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off
- Make sure the loft can be reached
- Let us know the exact address as you book
The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to go through what the drone showed. You can ask about anything that isn’t clear.
Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, so small faults are dealt with early.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, and the report can go to both. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps when budgeting.
Different roofs, different checks
Flat roofs on tall buildings
The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Widespread slipping on slate usually means nail fatigue. We can see the extent of it from above.
Airspace, weather and Eddington roofs
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
Take an older house close to Hungerford Methodist Church: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Checking the roof from the ground
You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Eddington questions
Is my home in Eddington listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do you cover smaller places like Eddington?
Yes. Eddington is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
How long does a drone roof survey take?
It usually takes about one to two hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. That includes the checks before the drone goes up.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.
Can you fly a drone in central London?
In some places, only with permission. Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas that need NATS permission. Every address is checked first, and fall back on other viewpoints if we can’t fly.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
How the survey works
You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes between one and two hours for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Around Eddington, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
