Drone roof surveys in Upper Edmonton

What we are asked to look at in Upper Edmonton

After storms, owners want to know what has moved. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted

As a London address, Upper Edmonton can be tricky for parking: let us know about parking bays, permits or a driveway as you book.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Their report turnaround times
  • What exactly goes into their report
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price

What a roof survey includes

How a drone roof survey works in Upper Edmonton

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. We check the airspace for your address before the visit. If a drone is not the right tool, we will say so. Typical surveys look at slipped or missing slates on a high roof and vegetation in valleys and gutters, across tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and valleys and parapet gutters.

In London’s terraces and conversions, roofs are packed close together, which makes care around neighbours part of the job. We take care to focus on the roof we have been asked to look at. Mention access, height and anything unusual about the building when you book. Steep slopes, tall chimneys and rear additions are where the extra view helps most.

The report is written in plain words, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to.

When you need someone else

It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and does not.

What this survey covers

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks

How it works

On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where it applies. Most surveys take about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so rear slopes are viewed from windows, the loft or, where a flight is allowed, by drone. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, tell us as you book.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Tips that help

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to go through what the drone showed. You can ask about anything that is not clear.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Check insulation does not block the airflow.

Upper Edmonton questions

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Upper Edmonton?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Upper Edmonton?

It can be, so it is useful to let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space when you book. That way the visit can be planned around it.

How long will you be at the property?

That depends on the size and shape of the roof, but most surveys take an hour or two for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. The written report follows by email.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

How fast do I get the report?

Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.

What happens after the survey?

You’ll get the report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.

Do you look in the roof space?

If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.

Airspace, weather and Upper Edmonton roofs

Alongside Victorian and Edwardian terraces, outer London has a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs of clay or concrete tiles. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Bruce Castle, about 1.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Upper Edmonton. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

For an older house near a landmark such as St Mary's Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. For businesses in and around places such as Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from above or with a thermal imager.

Leave it or get it looked at?

It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. Our report shows the condition of each area. You can tackle the urgent items first. Many older London roofs have only old felt under the slates, or no underlay at all, so a slipped slate can soon mean water inside. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.
