Flying and imaging in Upper Green

The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.

The streets around a church such as Church of St Michael are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. Take a building like Inkpen Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. With Stargroves about 2.9 miles south-east, the area around Upper Green has a long history. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

How a drone roof survey works in Upper Green

Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs cannot always be inspected up close. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. If you’ve noticed standing water on a flat roof and ridge and hip pieces working loose, we can find out what’s behind it.

In a small place like Upper Green, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

Common questions in Upper Green

Is Upper Green within the area you cover?

Yes. Upper Green is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.

Is my home in Upper Green listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

How experienced are you?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

What do I do with the report?

You will receive the report by email, and you decide the next step: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.

Can you survey a roof inside a flight restriction zone?

Flight restriction zones around protected airports need permission from the airport or air traffic control before any flight. We check the airspace for your address and seek permission where it is needed. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points.

Is a drone roof survey a thermal survey?

The drone gives you detailed photos of the outside of the roof. Thermal imaging comes with the Premium Survey, as a separate check.

DIY checks: what’s safe

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.

What we cannot see

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:

  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • Flights in high wind or heavy rain

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Large and complex roofs

What happens on the day

The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photos go into the written report. The visit typically takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Older roofs in small places like Upper Green can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

For landlords and managing agents

An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.

Why act early in Upper Green

A drone survey disturbs nothing on the roof. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so the survey does not create new problems. Around Upper Green, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we’ll tell you which fits.

Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. A drone keeps everyone off them.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.
