About our drone roof survey in West Ealing

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. Common reasons to book are slipped or missing slates on a high roof and vegetation in valleys and gutters, across large and complex roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and tall and steep roofs.

London roofs sit shoulder to shoulder in terraces and blocks, which makes care around neighbours part of the job. We take care to focus on the roof we’ve been asked to look at, in West Ealing as anywhere. Let us know about the building and access when booking. The extra view helps most on steep slopes, tall stacks and rear additions.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

What we look for on each type of roof

Large commercial roofs

Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. A drone keeps everyone off them.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. You cannot see it from the street at all, but a drone shows it clearly.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover

It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Flights in strong wind or heavy rain

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters

Can I check my roof myself?

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Tips that help

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:

  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Move stored items away from the hatch

If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. They’ll see exactly where each defect is, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Look at the roof from ground level after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone can show exactly what has moved.

Questions from West Ealing

Is my home in West Ealing listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Are there drone restrictions around West Ealing?

Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

Do you look in the roof space?

Where it is relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only when it’s safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

How do I book a survey in West Ealing?

Simply ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address. We’ll ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date, weekday or weekend.

Will I get photos?

Yes. Photos are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.

What happens on the day

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so a visit in West Ealing moves between viewpoints: the pavement, upstairs windows, the loft and any safe spot at the back. Shared stairs or a basement flat? Let us know who holds the keys.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Advice

Signs you need a drone roof survey in West Ealing

Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. From the ground, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. Close-up drone photos show their condition.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
  • Wind damage high on the roof
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof

Pitzhanger Manor lies about 1.4 miles east, so building around West Ealing goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What the survey will not cover
  • Are they insured for the work?
  • Their report turnaround times
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?

What to expect from a roof survey

Drones, thermal imaging and West Ealing roofs

We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up.

For an older house near a landmark such as St Mary's Cathedral, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps. For hotels and guest houses around West Ealing, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition.
