Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Yiewsley

A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it can’t see inside. Where there is safe access, we look in the roof space too, since that is where leaks and condensation often show first. Inside and out together tell you far more. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. If there is no safe loft access, the report says so. Common reasons to book are hidden gutters full of leaves and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, on valleys and parapet gutters, tall and steep roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.

London’s roofs are often hard to see from the street: butterfly roofs behind parapets, dormer tops and flat roofs over back additions. That’s where a view from the air or a thermal camera helps, by showing what cannot be reached safely. The weather decides the day: both drones and thermal cameras need the right conditions. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.

The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Airspace, weather and Yiewsley roofs

RAF Northolt is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. The wider area around Yiewsley has a long history of building, with Northolt Manor about 1.4 miles north-east. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

Parking in Yiewsley, as in most of London, takes a little planning: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space when booking, as a space near the door can’t be promised. Take an older house close to St Joseph the Worker & Dovetail Centre: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. For businesses in and around places like The Chimes, big, flat commercial roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images help most.

Common questions in Yiewsley

Can parking be tricky for a visit in Yiewsley?

It depends on the street. Where there are permit zones, a visitor permit or nearby pay-and-display bay works well, and a driveway is even better.

Are there drone restrictions around Yiewsley?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. The flight restriction zone around Heathrow Airport comes within about 2 miles of Yiewsley. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. RAF Northolt is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

Do you cover Yiewsley for drone roof surveys?

Yes. We survey roofs in Yiewsley and the rest of Greater London, as part of our work across London and South East England. To book, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

How long does the survey take?

Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. The report follows by email.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

Can you survey in bad weather?

Light rain does not normally stop a survey, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so we will agree a new date if the weather is not suitable.

What you can safely check yourself

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

How the survey works

We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is frequently on a shared landing. Where that is the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Roof by roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

Steep roofs are risky to walk on. From the air, every course of slates or tiles can be seen, showing slipped, cracked and missing pieces.

Chimney stacks

Chimney tops are hard to see from the ground. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.

When you need someone else

No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Chimney stacks
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

Surveys for landlords and agents in Yiewsley

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait.

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.

Useful tips for Yiewsley property owners

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:

  • Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions

There is a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, so small faults are dealt with early.
