Gutter survey in Burley: what you get
Your gutters take the rain from the roof and lead it away from the walls. If they clog, drip or sag, the water ends up somewhere it shouldn’t and that usually means the walls or the inside of the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, including gutters, valleys, outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. Typical surveys look at cracked or loose downpipes and leaks at the gutter joints, across valley gutters, outlets and hoppers and downpipes.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What a gutter survey looks like in Burley
About 2.3 miles south-west lies Avon Tyrrell House, a reminder of how long the area around Burley has been built on. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
For landlords with property near Sway station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Burley Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.
Burley is in Hampshire. Burley gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Burley is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire we cover for gutter surveys. We also survey roofs in Southampton.

What you can safely check yourself
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
Questions from Burley
Can a landlord with a rental near Sway station book a roof survey?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and what you need, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Will you come out to Burley?
Yes, we do. Our area covers London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.
Is a CCTV drain survey included?
No. Our gutter survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters to the bottom of the downpipes. If a drain below ground looks like the cause, the report says so.
How long will you be on site?
Most visits to a house take about 1–2 hours, and longer for larger or complex roofs.
Will the survey check for asbestos?
No, that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor. On buildings from before 2000, we flag materials that could contain it so you can arrange that check.
Tips from our surveys
Getting the most from a gutter survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
- Look out for overflows when it pours
- Look for downpipes coming loose
After any work is done, watch the gutters in the next heavy rain. Rain should flow to the outlets and down the downpipes. If it doesn’t, tell whoever did the work.
Have overhanging branches and climbing plants cut back from the roof by someone who can do it safely. Less debris means fewer blocked outlets.
Roof by roof
Fascias and soffits
Overflowing water stains soffits and rots timber. We check them along with the gutters.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Joints that have pulled apart are a common fault on plastic gutters. We record each one we can see.
Common roof problems in Burley
Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Nearby trees drop leaves, twigs and seeds into gutters every autumn and the debris builds up at the outlets. Once an outlet is choked, the gutter fills and overflows.
Common reasons to book include:
- Water backing up from a hidden gutter
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
- Cracked or loose downpipes
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St John the Baptist, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

How it works
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere like Burley needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and vantage points.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
- We look in the loft space, where there’s safe access, for signs of water getting in.
- You get a report with photographs and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
