Gutter Survey in Chalk
We carry out gutter surveys in Chalk and the rest of Kent. We survey seven days a week.
- Leaking or loose downpipes
- Joints that drip after rain
- Soffits marked by water
What we do, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. It normally takes about one to two hours at a typical home, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere as small as Chalk, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- First, you tell us what you’ve seen, such as overflows or damp.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from the ground and vantage points.
- We check hidden gutters, like valleys and parapets, where it is safe to see them.
- The roof space is checked for water marks if it is safe to get into.
- The findings are written up with photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- Let us know about parking before the day
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Gutter survey in Chalk: what you get
This survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters down to where the downpipes meet the ground. It is not a CCTV drain survey, so we cannot see inside underground pipes. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, we’ll say so in the report, so you can get the drains checked separately. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. We survey fascias and soffits, parapet and box gutters and eaves gutters, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are leaking or loose downpipes and soffits marked by water.
In a small place like Chalk, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

Honest limits
Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
- Parts of gutters that can’t be seen safely
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Chalk
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait.
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.
Roof by roof
Fascias and soffits
Soffits and timber fascias suffer when gutters overflow. They’re looked at as part of the survey.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Joints that have pulled apart are a common fault on plastic gutters. We record each one we can see.
Tips from our surveys
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Look for downpipes coming loose
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain
- Don’t climb a ladder to look in the gutters
- Have gutters cleared at least once a year
How quickly the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. It is sent to you by email as soon as it is ready.
Get trees and climbers near the eaves trimmed back using someone with the right kit. Less debris means fewer blocked outlets.
What a gutter survey looks like in Chalk
The coast is about 2 miles or less from Chalk, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof. The wider area around Chalk has a long history of building, with Cobham College about 2.8 miles south. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
Anyone responsible for a site like Thamesview School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If you let a flat or house near Gravesend station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. Trees in and around Shorne Woods Country Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.
Chalk is about 1 mile east of Gravesend, in Kent. Roofs in Chalk get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Kent. We cover towns and villages across Kent, from the larger towns to small villages. We also survey roofs in Maidstone.

Can I check my roof myself?
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.
FAQs for Chalk
Is my home in Chalk listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is Chalk within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.
When is the best time for a gutter survey?
Whenever suits you. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it is best not to wait, because the walls take the water.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes. Hidden gutters are a common cause of leaks inside so we pay close attention to them. Parts of them may not be visible, and we’ll note that in the report.
Are you insured?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
How soon will I get the report?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email.
How do I arrange a gutter survey in Chalk?
The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.
