Gutter Survey in Chells
Gutter surveys in Chells and the rest of Hertfordshire. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
- Leaks at the gutter joints
What happens if roof problems are left?
A blocked valley or parapet gutter does not spill harmlessly. It can back up into the loft space and the rooms below, often in the heaviest rain. Having them checked before autumn and winter makes sense. Around Chells, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

Gutter survey in Chells
People book a gutter survey when gutters overflow, when damp appears or before the wetter months. Landlords and managing agents use it to plan maintenance and buyers sometimes want the gutters looked at before they exchange. The survey and report follow the same steps whatever the reason with photos and clear recommendations. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. We survey fascias and soffits, valley gutters and eaves gutters, and people most frequently book us about water backing up from a hidden gutter and gutters packed with leaves or moss.
In a smaller place like Chells, homes range from older cottages to bungalows and newer houses. Older roofs can have slate, clay tiles or other traditional coverings, while many later ones have concrete tiles. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes frequently need the most attention, and the fixings under the coverings matter too. The fixings under an older roof often fail before good slates or tiles do.
If any part of the gutter couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Chells
How do I find out if my home in Chells is listed?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Should a flat-roofed garage or porch in Chells be checked too?
Yes, if you’d like it included, mention it when you book. On buildings from before 2000, cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos and should be checked by a specialist asbestos surveyor before anyone disturbs them.
Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?
Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form to arrange a day.
Do you cover Chells?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, Chells included.
How fast do I get the report?
Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when you book.
Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?
Any time of year works. Booking before autumn and winter gives you time to plan, and a wet spell can show where gutters overflow.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible.
Gutter surveys around Chells
Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. About 2.4 miles south lies Aston Bury, a reminder of how long the area around Chells has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Nobel School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. Take an older house close to St Hugh & St John: its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. If you let a flat or house near Stevenage station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.

What a gutter survey doesn’t cover
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Fascias and soffits
- Parapet and box gutters
- Outlets and hoppers
- Valley gutters
- Downpipes
- Eaves gutters
Practical tips
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Book gutter clearing once a year, more often near trees
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.
Get the gutters cleared every year, and more often if trees overhang the roof. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clean gutters can do their job.
What a survey costs
Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- Height and safe access
Every price we give includes VAT. Our price is from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before booking.
Booking your survey
What helps most when you contact us:
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
- The kind of building and roof involved
- When you need the report by
- Where the property is, with the postcode

What you can safely check yourself
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
How the survey works
We’ll ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and longer for a large or complex roof. For a survey in Chells, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.
- We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from the ground and vantage points.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
- We look in the roof space, where there is safe access, for signs of water getting in.
- We send a written report with photos and clear recommendations.
Before the survey
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Let us know where we can park nearby
- Leave side gates unlocked
