About our gutter survey in Compton
We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Compton and right across London and South East England. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view from the ground, windows, the roof space and the roof where it is safe. A visit usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Afterwards, you get a written report with photos and recommendations. We survey parapet and box gutters, fascias and soffits and outlets and hoppers, and people most often book us about hoppers and outlets full of debris and valley or box gutters that overflow inside.
Village roofs frequently face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
If any part of the gutter couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

The survey, step by step
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. In a hamlet or village like Compton, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Before the survey
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Find any records of previous roof work
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Why get it checked now?
It is easy to put damp down to the wrong cause. If a leaking gutter or downpipe is the source, other work on the wall will not stop it. Checking the gutters first helps you spend in the right place. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Compton, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before you book.

FAQs for Compton
Is Compton within the area you cover?
Yes, Compton is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Do you cover Compton?
Yes, Compton is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. You can phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and a few details, and we will talk through which survey suits.
When does the report arrive?
Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, tell us when booking.
Do I need to be at home?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we’re not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
When is the best time for a gutter survey?
There is no wrong time. If water is already spilling over, book sooner rather than later as overflowing water can damage walls.
What happens next?
The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
How the survey changes by roof type
Fascias and soffits
Soffits and timber fascias suffer when gutters overflow. We check them along with the gutters.
Box and secret gutters
Secret gutters are hidden under the edge of the roof covering, so they’re easy to forget. We check what’s visible and note what is not.
Gutter surveys in Compton: local notes
In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.
Take an older house close to Church of St Mary and St Nicholas: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

When to book a survey in Compton
Gutter brackets work loose or corrode with age. A gutter full of wet debris is heavy and the extra load drags the gutter down. Once the fall is lost, water sits at the low point and spills over.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
- Leaking or loose downpipes
- Joints that drip after rain
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
Take a building like Compton C.E. Primary School: long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.
