Gutter survey in Curridge, West Berkshire
A survey of gutters, valleys, outlets and downpipes across Curridge, using drones and thermal imaging where applicable. Call or email for a price.
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
How the survey changes by roof type
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Aluminium and other metal gutters are used on many newer and commercial buildings. Their joints and outlets still need checking.
Fascias and soffits
Most gutters are fixed to the fascia, so rot in the boards can loosen the whole run. We note soft, stained or damaged boards we can see.
Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Curridge
This survey covers rainwater above ground: gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows. It is not a CCTV drain survey and we can’t see inside buried drains. If the problem looks like a blocked or broken drain below ground, the report will say so, so you can get the drains checked separately. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. Common reasons to book are gutters full of debris and silt and rotten fascias or stained soffits, across parapet and box gutters, valley gutters and downpipes.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Common roof problems in Curridge
Hidden gutters are often lined with lead or another sheet covering. Splits and blocked outlets in these gutters can send water straight into the building, because there is no outer edge for it to spill over. Lead linings can also be stolen.
Problems we come across often include:
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Joints that drip after rain
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
For landlords with property near Newbury Racecourse station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.
What to check before booking
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Which limits apply to the survey
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
Practical tips
You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Don’t leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Do not climb a ladder to look in the gutters
Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. We also note anything else we spot on the roof while we’re there.
Get trees and climbers near the eaves trimmed back using someone with the right kit. Fewer leaves in the gutters means fewer blockages.
Can I check my roof myself?
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Curridge homes and their roofs
Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. With Shaw House about 2.5 miles south-west, Curridge sits in an area with a long building history. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
Take an older house close to Holy Trinity: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. Anyone responsible for a site like Curridge Primary School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

The survey, step by step
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit typically takes about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Rural addresses near Curridge can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level.
- We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we are coming
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Note where any stains or damp appear
Arrange a survey
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
Advice
Questions from Curridge
How do I find out if my home in Curridge is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is Curridge within the area you cover?
Yes, Curridge is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?
Yes, weekend visits are possible as well as weekdays. Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email to arrange it.
What happens next?
You will get the report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Will you look at parapet and box gutters as well?
Yes. Hidden gutters are a common cause of leaks inside, so they’re an important part of the survey. Parts of them may not be visible, and we will note that in the report.
Could my damp wall be caused by the gutters?
Leaking gutters and downpipes are a common cause of damp walls, and we check for exactly that. If the evidence points elsewhere, we will say so, based on what we can see.
Will you check the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.
