Ferring Gutter Survey
We take a careful look at the gutter at your property in Ferring, and put it all in a written report with photos.
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
- Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
About our gutter survey in Ferring
Gutters have to slope gently towards the outlet or water sits in them. When brackets sag or joints part, water pools, drips and spills over at the low points. We look along each run for sags, gaps and leaking joints and look at the brackets and downpipe clips. You get written recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. If you’ve noticed gutters full of debris and silt and cracked or loose downpipes, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Houses in smaller places like Ferring can face open ground, where wind and driving rain hit the roof harder. Ridge tiles, verges, chimney stacks and flashings take the worst of it. Checking those edges shows whether anything has begun to work loose. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.
What you get is a clear record of the gutter on the day we saw it. It’s useful straight away, and a good reference for later, like when you want to compare after future work.

How the survey works
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. A visit to Ferring is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed beforehand. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. Let us know about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Before we arrive
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Common roof problems in Ferring
Hidden gutters are frequently lined with lead or another sheet covering. When a lining splits or an outlet blocks, the water can come inside as there is nowhere harmless for it to go. Lead linings can also be stolen.
Problems we come across often include:
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
- Cracked or loose downpipes
If you live near a park like Durrington Minature Railway, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

Ferring: your questions answered
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ferring?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Does being near the coast affect roofs in Ferring?
Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, while strong wind lifts anything already loose.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes, where it is safe to see them. We look from vantage points, the loft space and the roof itself where safe, and by drone where it is applicable.
Will the survey check for asbestos?
No, that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor. We point out materials on older buildings that could contain asbestos so it can be checked before work starts.
Will I get photos?
Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.
How much is a gutter survey?
The Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard from £250 and the Premium from £400, all including VAT. Just phone 07833 053749 or email us for a price.
Will you check the loft?
If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.
Before and after the survey
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Look for downpipes coming loose
- Do not climb a ladder to look in the gutters
- Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
- Have gutters cleared at least once a year
How quickly the report arrives depends on the package: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. It is sent to you by email once it’s done.
Have your gutters cleared at least once a year, and more often if trees overhang the roof. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.
Gutter surveys in Ferring: local notes
Ferring lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
For landlords with property near Goring-By-Sea station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. If you live in an older home near St Andrew's Church, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

What we can’t see
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- The inside of buried drains
- Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
