Tips that help

Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. Our suggestions:

  • Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off
  • Make sure the loft can be reached
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared

File the report and photos with your home documents. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys, and they help if you sell.

Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, particularly in autumn. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.

About our drone roof survey in Ferring

We carry out drone roof surveys in Ferring and across London and South East England, where the airspace and the weather allow. Flights take place on weekdays and at weekends. We check the airspace for your address before booking a flight. The report includes the drone photos and our recommendations. To check whether your roof suits a drone survey, ring 07833 053749 or email us. We’re often asked to look into flat roofs on upper floors that hold water and storm damage on steep or tall roofs, on large and complex roofs, fragile roofs and chimney stacks.

Older cottages and houses around Ferring may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

What a survey costs

Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:

  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • The size of the roof
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you need to know.

Helping us price your survey

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • The address and postcode of the property
  • Any deadline, like an exchange date
  • What made you get in touch
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them

A quick phone call is typically the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or email us, and we will ask about the building and what you need. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.

When you need someone else

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

What we check

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters

DIY checks: what’s safe

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.

Drones, thermal imaging and Ferring roofs

Ferring is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Ecclesden Manor, about 1.6 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Ferring. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you live in an older home near St Andrew's Church, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Ferring is about 2 miles south-west of Worthing, in West Sussex. Ferring is part of the area we cover across London and South East England. Across West Sussex, we cover Ferring. Brighton is in our area too.

Surveys in BN12 are booked the same way as anywhere else. You’ll find streets like Pebble Lane, Ferringham Lane and Grange Park, and we cover them all. We also cover Kingston Gorse (1 mile south-west), Hangleton (1 mile north-west), West Kingston (1 mile west), Goring-by-Sea (1 mile east) and Angmering-on-Sea (1 mile west). Within a short drive, we also cover Bognor Regis (10 miles west), Chichester (15 miles west), Littlehampton (4 miles west), Shoreham-by-Sea (8 miles east), Lancing (6 miles east) and Rustington (3 miles west).

Landmarks near Ferring

We work in homes and buildings around Durrington Minature Railway and Chatsmore Catholic High School and the streets around them. For rail, the closest station is Goring-By-Sea station, roughly 0.9 miles north-east. A little further out are Rustington Museum (2.4 miles west) and Old Castle (2.6 miles north-east). The countryside around Ferring includes Highdown Hill.

Ferring questions

Are there drone restrictions around Ferring?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ferring?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Does the weather affect the survey?

Light rain is typically fine; heavy rain and wind are different. Strong wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, and we’d agree another day.

Are you insured?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report, and it doesn’t include calculations. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

What will the report tell me?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photographs throughout. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

How the survey works

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. Most visits take about one to two hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. For a survey in Ferring, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it is safe.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Check the loft hatch can be reached

Related advice

Do you need a drone roof survey in Ferring?

Many roofs are never seen properly from the ground. You can’t see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Problems in those places frequently go unseen until they leak, which is why owners turn to a drone.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
  • Flashings that have come away
  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Ferring CofE Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether the price includes VAT
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
