Firle Gutter Survey
Independent gutter surveys in Firle. We have completed more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
- Joints that drip after rain
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
- Gutters full of debris and silt
Should I look at the roof myself first?
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book.
Gutter survey in Firle: what you get
We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Firle and right across London and South East England. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible from the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it is safe. Time on site normally takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. The written report follows, with photographs and recommendations. Common reasons to book are water backing up from a hidden gutter and gutters packed with leaves or moss, across parapet and box gutters, downpipes and outlets and hoppers.
Village roofs frequently face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What we do, step by step
We will ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. For a village or hamlet like Firle, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Getting ready for the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed

What we look for on each type of roof
Box and secret gutters
Box and secret gutters often cause leaks indoors. Outlets, linings and overflows are checked as far as access allows.
Fascias and soffits
On buildings from before 2000, soffits may be asbestos cement. We flag any that could be for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.
Tips from our surveys
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Check for spilling water in a downpour
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
- Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
After any work is done, watch the gutters in the next heavy rain. Water should run to the outlets and away without spilling over. If it doesn’t, tell whoever did the work.
Hidden gutters need clearing too. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but you cannot check them from the street, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.
FAQs for Firle
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Firle?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
I let a flat near Glynde station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. Just call 07833 053749 or email us with the details, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not unless it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone.
How much time does the visit need?
Most visits to a house take about 1–2 hours, and longer for larger or complex roofs.
Do you look in the loft space?
If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.
Do you survey underground drains?
No, CCTV drain work isn’t part of this survey. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and flags signs of a drain problem.
When does the report arrive?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when booking.
What we can’t see
It is a careful look at the gutter, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
- Hidden sections we can’t view safely
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Gutter surveys around Firle
Firle is within about 5 miles of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
Living close to Lewes and Laughton Levels is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn. With Firle Place about 0.4 miles south-east, the area around Firle has a long history. If your home is one of the older ones, the roof may have been repaired many times, and the survey records how each part is holding up.

Do you need a gutter survey in Firle?
Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and rain washes it down into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that slows the flow and lets weeds take root.
Problems we come across frequently include:
- Gutters that have fallen out of line
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
For an older house near a landmark like The Parish Church of St Peter, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
