Your questions about gutter surveys in Ford
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ford?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Will you come out to Ford?
Yes, Ford is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Do you look in the loft space?
Normally, if there is one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.
Are you insured?
We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only when it’s safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
When does the report arrive?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email, ready to forward.
How experienced are you?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
How a gutter survey works in Ford
Owners get in touch after seeing an overflow, finding damp or planning ahead for winter. Landlords and managing agents use it to plan maintenance, and some buyers want the rainwater system checked before exchange. Whoever books, we inspect and report in the same way, with photographs and written recommendations. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. We survey parapet and box gutters, valley gutters and downpipes, and common reasons people get in touch are downpipes that are split or coming away and gutters packed with leaves or moss.
Some older homes in villages like Ford are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.
If any part of the gutter couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Leave it or get it looked at?
Water spilling from a gutter runs down and soaks the wall below. Left for months, that can lead to damp inside, worn pointing and rotten timber. Finding the cause now normally keeps the fix smaller. Outbuildings and barns around Ford are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.

How it works
The visit has one job: to see as much of the gutter as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Around Ford, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it is useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
How to prepare
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
How to book
Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.

Local roofs in Ford
Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas. A number of Buckinghamshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
For landlords with property near Haddenham & Thame Parkway station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Tips that help
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
- Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
You receive a report with photos and clear written recommendations. Share it with a contractor of your choice so they can see exactly what’s needed.
Get small faults like a dripping joint or loose downpipe sorted quickly. They tend to get worse, and the water they spill can damage walls and timber.
What we’re asked to look at in Ford
Lots of tiled and slate roofs carry moss, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that slows the flow and gives plants somewhere to grow.
Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed something like this:
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
- Joints that drip after rain
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Soffits marked by water
Shop and office owners around Friars Square may find that a roof report helps plan work around trading rather than after a leak.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- Are they insured for the work?
- What experience they bring
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
