Gutter survey in High Salvington: what you get
Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Buildings near trees collect more and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. The photographs show you exactly what we found. Blocked gutters are easy to put off but it rarely improves. Typical surveys look at overflowing eaves gutters and cracked or loose downpipes, on outlets and hoppers, eaves gutters and downpipes.
Around High Salvington, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Coverings range from slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on many later ones. On older homes, chimney stacks, valleys and gutters are typically where the work is. Nails and battens under older coverings frequently give out before the slates or tiles themselves.
Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey.
Common questions in High Salvington
Is High Salvington within the area you cover?
Yes, High Salvington is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Is my home in High Salvington listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
How long does a gutter survey take?
For a house, expect about 1–2 hours on site, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.
What happens next?
The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?
The survey looks at whether rainwater is spilling onto the wall, through overflows, drips or damaged downpipes. We can’t see inside the wall itself, so the report covers what can be seen.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes, as far as they can be seen safely. We look from vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe, and by drone where it is applicable.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only if it’s safe. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in High Salvington
High Salvington lies within about 4 miles of the sea, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
Living close to Clapham Wood is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Peter, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. With Ecclesden Manor about 3.1 miles south-west, the area around High Salvington has a long history. Older roofs nearby frequently mix original materials with later repairs, and the survey shows where each one is.

What else we do in High Salvington
Why act early in High Salvington
It’s easy to put damp down to the wrong cause. If a leaking gutter or downpipe is the source, other work on the wall will not stop it. Checking the gutters first helps you spend in the right place. With lower homes, common in places like High Salvington, there is little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.

How the survey works
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes an hour or two for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Homes around High Salvington often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, like damp or overflowing gutters.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
- Where it is safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- A photo-illustrated written report and recommendations follows.
