About our gutter survey in Durrington

People book a gutter survey when gutters overflow, when damp appears or before the wetter months. Landlords and managing agents use the report to plan upkeep, and some buyers want the rainwater system checked before exchange. The survey and report follow the same steps whatever the reason, with photographs and written recommendations. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. Common reasons to book are overflowing valley or parapet gutters and leaks at the gutter joints, across downpipes, fascias and soffits and parapet and box gutters.

Houses in smaller places like Durrington can face open ground, where wind and driving rain hit the roof harder. Ridge tiles, verges, chimney stacks and flashings take the worst of it. A close look shows whether anything has started to loosen before it lets water in. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.

Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

For landlords and managing agents

Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.

What we do, step by step

Before we start, tell us why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit typically takes between one and two hours for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. A visit to Durrington is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed ahead of time. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from ground level and windows.
  3. Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can safely be seen.
  4. The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
  5. A photo-illustrated written report and recommendations follows.

How to prepare

  • Tell us where we can park nearby
  • For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches

Common questions in Durrington

Do roofs near the sea, like those around Durrington, take more of a battering?

Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, while strong wind lifts anything already loose.

Will you come out to Durrington?

Yes, Durrington is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?

The survey looks at whether rainwater is spilling onto the wall, through overflows, drips or damaged downpipes. We cannot see inside walls, so the report covers what can be seen.

What insurance do you have?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?

No. We don’t test for asbestos. Where gutters, downpipes or soffits could be asbestos cement, we flag them and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes, plenty. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, which makes the report easy to follow.

Do I need to be at home?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

What a gutter survey looks like in Durrington

The coast is about 3 miles or less from Durrington, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof. Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.

Take a building like Durrington Junior School: its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. Living close to Durrington Minature Railway is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn. If you let a flat or house near Durrington-On-Sea station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

Durrington is about 1 mile north-west of Worthing, in West Sussex. Roofs in Durrington get the same thorough look as anywhere else in West Sussex. Durrington is one of the places in West Sussex where we work for gutter surveys. We also survey roofs in Brighton.

Gutter surveys in BN13 and BN12 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We offer gutter surveys to properties on Lyn Road, New Road and Tavy Road and the roads around them. You’ll find Durrington on the A2032, so it’s easy for us to get to. Nearby, we also carry out gutter surveys in Cote (1 mile north-west), High Salvington (1 mile north), Goring-by-Sea (2 miles south), Clapham (2 miles north-west) and Patching (2 miles north-west). Further out, we also cover Bognor Regis (12 miles west), Burgess Hill (15 miles north-east), Littlehampton (5 miles west), Shoreham-by-Sea (6 miles east), Lancing (4 miles east) and Rustington (4 miles west).

Around Durrington

We work in homes and buildings around Durrington Minature Railway, Coach And Horses Public House and Palatine Primary School, among other places. Well-known places in the area include The Acre (2.2 miles south-east) and Museum of Sussex Folklore (1.1 miles south-east). Not far away are Highdown Hill.

What we can’t see

In fairness, a roof survey has limits:

  • The inside of buried drains
  • Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely
  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

What we check

  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Downpipes
  • Eaves gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Valley gutters

Checking the roof from the ground

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

It is useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.

Leave it or get it looked at?

A blocked valley or parapet gutter does not spill harmlessly. It can overflow into the building, often in the heaviest rain. Having them checked before autumn and winter makes sense. Around Durrington, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.
