Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Hundridge
Eaves gutters at the front of a building are easy to spot but plenty of gutters are tucked away. Valley gutters between slopes, gutters behind parapet walls and box or secret gutters can send water indoors when they overflow. We check them as far as they can safely be seen using vantage points, the loft space and the roof itself where safe. Many leaks indoors start at a hidden gutter. If you’ve noticed leaves and moss blocking gutters and hoppers and outlets full of debris, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Somewhere as small as Hundridge, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it’s normally the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Useful tips for Hundridge property owners
A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
- Check for spilling water in a downpour
- Don’t climb a ladder to look in the gutters
- Check the loft with care after heavy rain
Questions about the report are welcome. With the Standard Survey there’s a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey comes with an in-person one.
Get trees and climbers near the eaves trimmed back by someone who can do it safely. Fewer leaves in the gutters means fewer blockages.
Common questions in Hundridge
How do I find out if my home in Hundridge is listed?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Great Missenden station?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details.
What happens after the survey?
You receive the written report by email, with photos and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.
Are you insured?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us to arrange a day.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.
Checking the roof from the ground
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.

Gutter surveys in Hundridge: local notes
About 3.4 miles north lies Cholesbury Manor House, a reminder of how long the area around Hundridge has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. A number of Buckinghamshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
Anyone responsible for a site like Hyde Heath Infant School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Getting in touch
We’ll usually ask about:
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
- What kind of property and roof it is
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
If you are buying, it is useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. For any other survey, just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email when you are ready.
How it works
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Around Hundridge, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
- We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- A photo-illustrated written report and recommendations follows.
Before the survey
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent

Common roof problems in Hundridge
Some gutters may be too small, or have too few downpipes, for the roof they serve. Added roof area from an extension can load an older gutter, and a heavy downpour shows up the problem.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
- Joints that drip after rain
- Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
If you let a flat or house near Great Missenden station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.
