About our gutter survey in Newtown
Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Buildings near trees collect more and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. Photos show each problem clearly. It’s an easy job to put off, but they rarely get better. We survey valley gutters, eaves gutters and fascias and soffits, and common reasons people get in touch are gutters overflowing in heavy rain and cracked or loose downpipes.
In a village or hamlet like Newtown, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. We report on what can be seen safely, and thatch is a specialist material. On older roofs, it is usually the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Gutter surveys around Newtown
Newtown is within about 5 miles of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, while driving rain finds any gap. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.
If you let a flat or house near Portchester station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Newtown Soberton Infant School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
Newtown is about 5 miles north-west of Waterlooville, in Hampshire. We survey roofs in Newtown and the rest of Hampshire. Across Hampshire, we cover Newtown and the places around it. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.

Tips from our surveys
You do not need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Check from the ground or a window, not a ladder
- Check the loft with care after heavy rain
- Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
You receive a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. Share it with a contractor of your choice so they can see exactly what’s needed.
Watch your gutters from the ground or a window during heavy rain. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before the walls suffer.
What affects the cost of gutter surveys
Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:
- House, block, shop or office
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.
What to let us know when you contact us
Getting the details right at the start saves time. It helps to include:
- What’s prompted the survey
- Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
Once you know what you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. We’ll suggest a package, agree the price and find a date.
What a gutter survey does not cover
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- Hidden sections we can’t view safely
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
- The inside of buried drains
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

Newtown questions
Is Newtown within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Can a landlord with a rental near Portchester station book a roof survey?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details, including who will give access on the day.
What happens after the survey?
You’ll receive the report by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No, we do not carry out CCTV drain surveys. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and note any sign that the drains need checking.
Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?
The survey looks at whether rainwater is spilling onto the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We can’t see inside walls, so we report on what’s visible.
How much time does the visit need?
Most visits to a house take about 1–2 hours, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.
What will the report tell me?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos. Points are put by urgency where it matters.
What we are asked to look at in Newtown
Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and rain washes it down into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that slows the flow and lets weeds take root.
Look out for signs like these:
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Joints that drip after rain
- Gutters that have fallen out of line
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
The streets around a church like Church of the Holy Trinity are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What experience they bring
- What the survey will not cover
- Their insurance cover
- Will the report include photos?
How the survey works
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes between one and two hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Rural addresses near Newtown can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
- Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
- The loft space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
- We send a written report with photos and clear recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Keep pets in another room
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Jot down any questions you want answered

Should I look at the roof myself first?
It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
