How a gutter survey works in Norton Heath

We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Norton Heath and right across London and the South East. We inspect everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows and from the roof space. Time on site normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. The written report follows, with photographs and recommendations. We survey eaves gutters, parapet and box gutters and fascias and soffits, and common reasons people get in touch are overflowing valley or parapet gutters and downpipes that are split or coming away.

Village roofs frequently face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are frequently where weather gets in first.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Different roofs, different checks

Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters

Many older homes have lead-lined valley and parapet gutters. Splits and failed joints in the lead can let water straight in.

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Aluminium and other metal gutters are used on many newer and commercial buildings. Their joints and outlets still need checking.

What affects the price in Norton Heath

Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:

  • How big the roof is
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

A Basic Survey starts from £150, including VAT. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both with VAT included. We confirm the price for your survey before you book.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • When you need the report by
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Anything about access we should know

Prices start from £150, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, so ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.

Can I check my roof myself?

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Practical tips

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:

  • Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
  • Look out for overflows when it pours
  • Make sure downpipe clips are holding
  • Get the gutters cleaned out every year

For let and shared buildings, the report can go on file to help plan maintenance. The photos help when you explain the work to others.

Have overhanging branches and climbing plants cut back from the roof by someone who can do it safely. Fewer leaves in the gutters means fewer blockages.

How the survey works

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect about one to two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Somewhere like Norton Heath needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely, inside and out.

  1. First, we agree the areas to focus on.
  2. We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
  • Let us know about parking near the property
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

What a gutter survey looks like in Norton Heath

Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, alongside a good many post-war and newer estates. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. With Ingatestone Hall about 4.8 miles south-east, Norton Heath sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of All Saints, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. If you let a flat or house near Ingatestone station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. Take a building like Blackmore Primary School: its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Norton Heath is about 6 miles north of Brentwood, in Essex. From houses to flats and shops in Norton Heath, we can survey the roof. Our Essex coverage includes Norton Heath and the places around it. For surveys nearby, see our Chelmsford page.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Norton Heath

Is Norton Heath within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Ingatestone station?

Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details, including who will give access on the day.

Will the survey check for asbestos?

No. We don’t test for asbestos. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Do you survey underground drains?

No. We look at above-ground rainwater only, from the gutters to the bottom of the downpipes. If a drain below ground looks like the cause, the report says so.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when booking.

What’s in the report?

It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, and ends with what we recommend. The most urgent items are made clear.
