Puckeridge homes and their roofs
About 3.3 miles south-east lies Much Hadham Palace, a reminder of how long the area around Puckeridge has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Whatever the covering, it’s frequently the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
If you look after a building like Roger De Clare First CofE School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

Gutter survey in Puckeridge: what you get
People book a gutter survey when gutters overflow, when damp appears or before the wetter months. Landlords and managing agents use it to plan maintenance and buyers sometimes want the gutters looked at before they exchange. Whoever books, we inspect and report in the same way with photos and clear recommendations. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. We survey fascias and soffits, valley gutters and parapet and box gutters, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are dripping or leaking gutter joints and water backing up from a hidden gutter.
Around Puckeridge, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Coverings range from slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on many later ones. On older homes, chimney stacks, valleys and gutters are typically where the work is, and the fixings under the coverings matter too. The fixings under an older roof frequently fail before good slates or tiles do.
The report records the gutter as we found it on the day. It’s useful straight away, and a good reference for later.

Puckeridge: your questions answered
Do you carry out roof surveys in Puckeridge?
Yes, Puckeridge is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and tell us about the property.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Puckeridge?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
How much is a gutter survey?
The Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard from £250 and the Premium from £400, all with VAT included. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form for a price.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only if it is safe. We check everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report, and it doesn’t include calculations. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the building owner or managing agent. Tell us about it as you book and we will explain what’s needed.
Checking the roof from ground level
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
What we look for on each type of roof
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Plastic can become brittle with age and split. We check joints, brackets and the line of each run.
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
Lead gutters need their linings, steps and outlets in good order as far as they can be seen safely. Missing lead is something we check for too.
When to book a survey in Puckeridge
Most gutter joints rely on seals or sealant that wear out. Plastic gutters move with heat and cold so their joints can start to leak. Cast iron joints can corrode and part once the paint has worn away.
Typical things we’re asked to look at include:
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
- Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Mary, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

How it works
You do not need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll take it from there. A typical survey takes about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Puckeridge is booked with the forecast in mind: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from the ground and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Getting ready for the survey
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Check pets are kept safely away
Getting a price
Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, and you can phone 07833 053749 or email us to find out.
Advice
Why it is worth a survey now in Puckeridge
Climbing a ladder to look in the gutters yourself is risky. You can see drips and overflows from the ground, but valleys, parapets and box gutters are hard to see. Our survey covers everything that’s safely in view and records it with photos. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Puckeridge, so it helps to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. A survey gives you that notice.
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

What a gutter survey doesn’t cover
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:
- Pipes below ground level
- What’s hidden inside a downpipe
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.
