Gutter survey in Redbridge, Southampton
Not sure what state the gutter is in? You can book a gutter survey in Redbridge and across Southampton.
- Leaking or loose downpipes
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
Practical tips
There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Check the loft with care after heavy rain
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Check for spilling water in a downpour
Once work is carried out, keep an eye on the gutters in the next downpour. Rain should flow to the outlets and down the downpipes, and if it doesn’t, raise it with whoever did the job.
Do not forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They block in the same way as the gutters you can see but you cannot check them from the street, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.
Gutter survey in Redbridge
Most gutters hang from the fascia boards at the eaves, so we look at the fascias and soffits too. Water that overflows for long enough can rot timber fascias and mark the soffits underneath. On buildings from before 2000, some soffits and rainwater goods may be asbestos cement. We don’t carry out asbestos testing, but we flag anything that could contain it. If you are worried about valley or box gutters that overflow inside and leaking or loose downpipes, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
In a village or hamlet like Redbridge, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are frequently old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What we cannot see
We only report whatever is safely visible on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Hidden sections we can’t view safely
- The inside of buried drains
- Blockages deep inside downpipes

How it works
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes between one and two hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a small place like Redbridge, access is typically the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, like damp or overflowing gutters.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can safely be seen.
- The loft space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- A report with photos and recommendations follows.
Getting ready for the survey

Advice
Why get it checked now?
A written report gives you a dated record of the gutters’ condition, useful when you are planning maintenance or getting work priced. Without one, it is guesswork from ground level. Outbuildings and barns around Redbridge are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.
Why us?

What you can safely check yourself
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
FAQs for Redbridge
Is Redbridge within the area you cover?
Yes, Redbridge is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Redbridge?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes, as far as they can be seen safely. We use the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it is safe, and by drone where it is applicable.
How soon will I get the report?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email, ready to forward.
Does the report include photos?
Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.
Redbridge homes and their roofs
Redbridge is within about 1 mile of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Historic houses such as Southampton Tudor House and Garden, about 3.3 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Redbridge goes. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
For site and facilities teams at buildings like Redbridge Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. Homes near green spaces such as St James' Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn.

Do you need a gutter survey in Redbridge?
Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Every autumn, trees fill gutters with leaves, twigs and seeds, and they collect at the outlets. A choked outlet soon means a full, overflowing gutter.
We are often asked to look at:
- Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
- Leaking or loose downpipes
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
Shop and office owners around Marlands Shopping Centre may find that a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions.
