Need a gutter survey in Ugley?

The survey, step by step

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Somewhere as small as Ugley, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. First, you tell us what you’ve seen, like overflows or damp.
  2. Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
  3. Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can safely be seen.
  4. The loft space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
  5. The findings are written up with photos and recommendations.

About our gutter survey in Ugley

Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t, often down the brickwork or into the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, from eaves gutters and valleys to outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. We’re often asked to look into soffits marked by water and joints that drip after rain, across valley gutters, fascias and soffits and downpipes.

Some older homes in villages like Ugley are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.

The report does not just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

How the survey changes by roof type

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Joints that have pulled apart are a common fault on plastic gutters. We record each one we can see.

Box and secret gutters

Secret gutters are hidden under the edge of the roof covering and is easy to overlook. We look at what’s visible and note what is not.

Why it is worth a survey now in Ugley

Damp walls are sometimes blamed on the wrong thing. When rainwater goods are the source, treating the wall alone will not solve it. Checking the gutters first helps you spend in the right place. Outbuildings and barns around Ugley are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. You’ll know the price for the job before booking.

Do you need a gutter survey in Ugley?

Valley, parapet and box gutters are often lined with lead or a sheet material. When a lining splits or an outlet blocks, the water can come inside, because there is no outer edge for it to spill over. Lead is also a target for theft.

Here are some of the things we see frequently:

  • Soffits marked by water
  • Cracked or loose downpipes
  • Sagging gutters and loose brackets
  • Gutters packed with leaves or moss

For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Peter, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

What to check before booking

  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
  • What experience they bring
  • What happens after the report arrives
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?

What a roof survey includes

When you need someone else

A survey is a careful look at the gutter, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:

  • What’s behind fascias and inside walls
  • Blockages deep inside downpipes
  • Hidden sections we can’t view safely

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

What we check

  • Fascias and soffits

Your questions about gutter surveys in Ugley

Will you come out to Ugley?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ugley?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?

No. We don’t test for asbestos. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.

How quickly is the report sent?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email, ready to forward.

Do you use drones?

Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only where it is safe to do so. We look at everything that can safely be seen: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.

Checking the roof from the ground

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking and it will help the survey.

What a gutter survey looks like in Ugley

In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. The wider area around Ugley has a long history of building, with Horham Hall about 4.6 miles east. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

Landlords with a home close to Elsenham station may find that a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.
