Gutter survey in West Green, West Sussex
An experienced roof surveyor for gutter surveys in West Green. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
- Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
- Leaks at the gutter joints
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
Gutter survey in West Green
Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t, frequently down the brickwork or into the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, including gutters, valleys, outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. We survey parapet and box gutters, outlets and hoppers and downpipes, and common reasons people get in touch are brackets that have dropped or snapped and valley or box gutters that overflow inside.
In a smaller place like West Green, some roofs stand more exposed to wind and rain than in a built-up town. Ridge tiles, verges, chimney stacks and flashings take the worst of it. A proper look shows whether anything has started to loosen. Once one ridge tile or slate moves, wind gets under the next one too.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Before and after the survey
Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
- Look for downpipes coming loose
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
If we think the problem lies underground, we will say so, so you can arrange a drain survey. We also note anything else we spot on the roof while we are there.
Hidden gutters need clearing too. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but you can’t check them from the street, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.
West Green questions
Is my home in West Green listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
My home in West Green has a flat-roofed garage or porch. Is it worth having that looked at?
Yes, if you’d like it included, mention it as you book. On buildings from before 2000, cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos and should be checked by a specialist asbestos surveyor before anyone disturbs them.
How soon will I get the report?
That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Do I need to be at home?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when you book.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.
How long does a gutter survey take?
It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. We will give you an idea when you book.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability.

What happens on the day
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit typically takes an hour or two at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Being in a smaller place like West Green doesn’t change how the visit works: we look from the ground, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it is safe. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.
- First, you tell us what you’ve seen, such as overflows or damp.
- Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
- Any valley, parapet or box gutters are looked at as far as safe access allows.
- The loft space is checked for water marks if it is safe to get into.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

Advice
Gutter surveys in West Green: local notes
In Sussex, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.
The streets around a church like Voice of Deliverance Full Gospel Church of God are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. If you let a flat or house near Crawley station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as West Green Primary School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

What we can’t see
Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
- Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely
- Blockages deep inside downpipes

What we look for on each type of roof
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Plastic rainwater systems are common on homes of many ages. As the seals age, joints can start to drip, and brackets can sag under load.
Cast iron gutters
Rust at joints and brackets is the usual weak point on cast iron. We note corrosion, cracks and leaking joints where they can be seen.
