Independent gutter surveys in Wickham Bishops

Roof by roof

Fascias and soffits

Overflowing water stains soffits and rots timber. We check them along with the gutters.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Plastic can become brittle with age and crack. We check joints, brackets and the line of each run.

About our gutter survey in Wickham Bishops

Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t and that normally means the walls or the inside of the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, from eaves gutters and valleys to outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. We survey eaves gutters, downpipes and valley gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are leaks at the gutter joints and brackets that have dropped or snapped.

Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.

The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

How it works

The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there’s safe access. In total, it takes between one and two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Older roofs in small places like Wickham Bishops can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.

  1. You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
  2. We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
  3. We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
  4. Where it is safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
  5. A written report with photos and recommendations follows.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

Wickham Bishops questions

How do I find out if my home in Wickham Bishops is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Wickham Bishops?

Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there’s more wind, and more salt in the air. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it usually shows, and Wickham Bishops is within about 5 miles of the coast.

Does the season matter for a gutter survey?

Any time of year works. Booking before autumn and winter gives you time to plan though problems often show up after heavy rain.

Do you check valley and parapet gutters?

Yes, where it is safe to see them. We use the ground, windows, the roof space and the roof where it is safe, and by drone where it is applicable.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Where it’s relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.

How long will you be on site?

For a house, expect about 1–2 hours on site, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the building owner or managing agent. Let us know about it when you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.

What a gutter survey looks like in Wickham Bishops

Wickham Bishops is within about 5 miles of the coast, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Bartholomew, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. Trees in and around Whet Mead shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters. Landlords with a home close to Witham station may find that a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

Wickham Bishops is about 2 miles south-east of Witham, in Essex. Wickham Bishops gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a proper look at whatever is safely visible, photographs and a clear written report. For landlords and managing agents

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.

When you need someone else

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
  • Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely
  • What’s behind fascias and inside walls

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will recommend the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Valley gutters
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Downpipes
  • Eaves gutters

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Overflowing water soaks the walls under the gutter. Given time, it can cause damp patches, damaged pointing and rot in nearby timber. Spotting the problem early tends to mean a simpler fix. For older village homes like those around Wickham Bishops, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Our price is from £150, including VAT.
