Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

Historic houses such as Ockenden Manor, about 1.2 miles north-east, show how far back building around Ansty goes. Older roofs nearby often mix original materials with later repairs, and the survey shows where each one is. For landlords with property near Haywards Heath station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. If you look after a building such as Warden Park School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

How a roof survey works in Ansty

The report is written for you, in plain language. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and where it’s relevant we say what’s urgent and what can wait. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. Premium adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where applicable and a same-day report. Each report is emailed to you. We survey flat roofs, ridges, hips and valleys and the roof space, and common reasons people get in touch are ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs and gutters that overflow in heavy rain.

Some older homes in villages like Ansty are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Ansty questions

Will you come out to Ansty?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

How do I find out if my home in Ansty is listed?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

What’s covered in a roof inspection?

Every part of the roof we can safely see: coverings, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys, gutters and the loft. Higher packages add moisture detection, structural checks, thermal imaging and a drone where it applies.

Will you climb onto the roof?

When the roof and the conditions make it safe, yes. We also use views from the ground, windows and the roof space.

Do you give a life expectancy for the roof?

We don’t give a number of years. We describe the condition of each part of the roof and how it is wearing, and we say what needs attention and how urgently.

How experienced are you?

We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Just say which days work for you.

Different roofs, different checks

Lead flashings and valleys

Many older houses have lead in their valleys and hidden gutters. Worn or split lead lets water straight in.

Natural slate

Slate is one of the most durable roof coverings, but its nails frequently corrode first. Slipped, cracked and missing slates are all noted.

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:

  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

When you need someone else

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will suggest the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What this survey covers

  • The roof space
  • Lead flashings
  • Natural slate
  • Ridges, hips and valleys
  • Clay and concrete tiles
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs

Checking the roof from the ground

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • File the report with your home documents
  • Mention any damp patches when booking
  • Mention any flat roofs as well as the main roof
  • Make sure we can open the loft hatch

File the report with your other home documents. It gives you something to compare against later, and buyers may ask about the roof when you sell.

Have gutters and valleys cleared regularly, particularly after autumn. Leave the clearing to a professional. Clear gutters prevent a lot of damp.
