What a roof survey looks like in Asheridge

About 1.7 miles north lies Cholesbury Manor House, a reminder of how long the area around Asheridge has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

If you own a rental within reach of Great Missenden station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. For an older house near a landmark like St John's Church, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Chartridge Combined School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Asheridge is about 2 miles north-west of Chesham, in Buckinghamshire. We visit Asheridge as part of our work across Buckinghamshire, for homes and businesses alike. Across Buckinghamshire, we cover Asheridge and the places around it. For surveys nearby, see our Milton Keynes page.

Surveys in HP5 are booked the same way as anywhere else. If you need a roof survey at a property on Widmore Close and Braziers End or anywhere close by, we can survey it. We also cover the places around Asheridge: Chartridge (1 mile south-west), Bellingdon (1 mile north), Hawridge (1 mile north), Pond Park (1 mile south-east) and Heath End (2 miles north-east). Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Asheridge

The report is written for you, in plain language. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and we rank them by urgency where that helps. With the Standard Survey you also get moisture detection and a structural check. Premium adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where it applies and a same-day report. Each report is emailed to you. We survey the roof space, clay and concrete tiles and flat roofs, and people most often book us about leaning or weathered chimney stacks and cracked mortar along the ridge.

Somewhere as small as Asheridge, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs frequently need the most attention.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

How we price roof surveys

All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • How big the roof is

Our price is from £150, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, including VAT, and we can help you choose.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access

Once you know what you need, call 07833 053749 or email us. We’ll suggest a package, agree the price and find a date.

Tips that help

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:

  • Ask about a flat roof on an extension or garage too
  • Don’t climb onto the roof yourself
  • Watch for slipped slates after bad weather
  • Photograph stains when they appear

If you need work done, the report gives roofers a clear brief. The photos show what we found and where, which makes quotes easier to compare.

Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear of leaves and moss, particularly after autumn. Use a gutter contractor rather than climbing a ladder yourself. Most overflow damage starts with a blocked gutter.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Each chimney’s pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked. We note any lean or loose pots.

Lead flashings and valleys

Flashings and valleys are where many leaks start. That’s why we check them closely.

Why get it checked now?

Hidden gutters and valleys can fail without warning. An overflow there sends water indoors. We look at them before they cause trouble. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

FAQs for Asheridge

I let a flat near Great Missenden station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details.

Will you come out to Asheridge?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

What do you check on a roof survey?

Every part of the roof we can safely see: the slates or tiles, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys, gutters and roof space. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check, and Premium adds thermal imaging and a drone where it applies.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. Where materials might contain it, we say so in the report so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.

Can you survey a roof I share with a neighbour?

Yes. We survey the parts of the roof you have access to. If a problem seems to come from next door, we’ll say so.

For landlords and managing agents

Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf. Access is agreed with the tenant ahead of time.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.

The survey, step by step

The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit normally takes about one to two hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. Somewhere like Asheridge needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
  2. We arrive at the agreed time and talk through any concerns.
  3. Coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are inspected and photographed.
  4. Moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging or a drone are added where your package includes them.
  5. The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
