Roof survey in Ramsdell
Most houses have more than one roof to look at. Flat roofs over extensions, garages and dormers are common. We check them as well as the main pitched roof, including signs of standing water, splits and tired upstands. Flat roofs often need attention long before the main roof. Felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, while EPDM rubber can last 30 to 50. If you’ve noticed ridge tiles that have lifted or moved and leaning or weathered chimney stacks, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Somewhere as small as Ramsdell, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on whatever is safely visible, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photographs show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

What a roof survey looks like in Ramsdell
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. About 2.9 miles east lies The Vyne, a reminder of how long the area around Ramsdell has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
If you let a flat or house near Bramley (Hants) station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. If you live in an older home near Christ Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.
Ramsdell is about 3 miles south of Tadley, in Hampshire. We provide roof surveys for homes and businesses in Ramsdell and nearby. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire. Reading is in our area too.

Common roof problems in Ramsdell
Some damage starts inside the loft space. Poor ventilation lets condensation build up in the loft, wetting timbers and insulation. It can look like a leak, and it needs a different fix.
People normally book a survey when they’ve noticed something like this:
- Ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs
- Water stains on rafters and ceiling joists
- Ridge tiles that have lifted or moved
- Leaning or weathered chimney stacks
For site and facilities teams at buildings like The Priory Primary School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- What experience they bring
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- What happens after the report arrives

What else we do in Ramsdell
What we do, step by step
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photos, sent to you by email. As for time on site, most surveys take about one to two hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. In a hamlet or village like Ramsdell, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- You let us know about the property and any concerns.
- A visit is booked for a weekday or a weekend.
- The roof is inspected from ground level, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it’s safe.
- Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all examined and photographed.
- Your report arrives by email, with recommendations prioritised by urgency.
Getting ready for the survey

Advice
Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Do not climb onto the roof yourself
- Photograph stains when they appear
- Let us know about past leaks
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
File the report with your other home documents. It is a useful baseline for future surveys, and it can help when you sell.
After a storm, check the roof from the garden and the street. Slipped slates, lifted ridge tiles or pieces in the garden are signs something has moved. Getting small faults fixed quickly keeps water out.
Questions from Ramsdell
Is my home in Ramsdell listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
I let a flat near Bramley (Hants) station. Can you check the roof?
Of course. We just need to know who will give access, and we can send the report to you or your agent.
Will you climb onto the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the loft space. On Premium, a drone is used where applicable.
Do you look in the loft space?
Typically, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.
How do I book a survey in Ramsdell?
Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.
How much does a roof survey cost in Ramsdell?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, inc. VAT.
Does the weather affect the survey?
It depends on the weather and the survey. In high wind or heavy rain, a drone cannot fly and access may not be safe, so we’d move the date with you.
DIY checks: what’s safe
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
