Roof surveys for homes and businesses in West Hougham
Across London and South East England, roofs differ widely. If your home is a Victorian terrace, it may have Welsh slate, a butterfly roof and parapet gutters, while many post-war homes have concrete interlocking tiles. Whatever yours has, the survey is adapted to it. Some older homes have clay tiles, and many have a flat-roofed extension as well. Every part gets the attention it needs. Common reasons to book are torn or sagging underlay and valley linings that have cracked or split, on chimney stacks, natural slate and clay and concrete tiles.
In a small place like West Hougham, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

What we cannot see
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Bear these in mind:
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
- An exact number of years the roof has left
- Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll recommend the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.
What this survey covers

- The roof space
- Clay and concrete tiles
- Lead flashings
- Ridges, hips and valleys
- Flat roofs
What happens on the day
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, from the ground, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where it applies. The survey normally takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. Older rural homes like those around West Hougham can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.
- You pick the package that suits your roof.
- On the day, we start by hearing what you’ve noticed.
- We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
- Moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging or a drone are added where your package includes them.
- The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
Booking a survey
Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Advice
Common roof problems in West Hougham
A blocked gutter does more harm than it looks. Leaves, moss and silt build up, the gutter overflows and water soaks the walls. Valley and parapet gutters can overflow inside the building, particularly near trees.
We are often asked to look at:
- Condensation or damp timbers in the loft
- Crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching
- Worn lead at chimneys and abutments
- Cracked or blistered flat roof coverings
If you live near a park like East Cliff and Warren Country Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

What a survey costs
We confirm the exact price before booking. These are the things that affect it:
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.
Booking your survey
To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:
- What made you get in touch
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply call 07833 053749 or use the contact form whenever suits you.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in West Hougham
West Hougham lies within about 1 mile of the sea, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St Mary's Church, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Capel-le-Ferne Primary School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the details.
How much is a survey?

Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and that includes West Hougham.
Why it is worth a survey now in West Hougham
Leaks rarely show up right away. Damp spreads through insulation and timber before anything shows below. From inside the loft space, we can often spot it sooner. For an older or listed building in a place like West Hougham, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.
All our prices include VAT. Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. You’ll know the exact price before you book.
