Roof survey in Wycombe Marsh
There is no single reason to have a roof surveyed. Some have spotted a stain or a slipped slate, while others just want to know where they stand. The approach is the same in each case: we inspect carefully and explain what we see in writing. We survey on weekdays and at weekends, so finding a time is rarely difficult. Common reasons to book are ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs and cracked mortar along the ridge, on clay and concrete tiles, natural slate and ridges, hips and valleys.
In a village or hamlet like Wycombe Marsh, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. We report on what can be seen safely, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

When to book a survey in Wycombe Marsh
A blocked gutter does more harm than it looks. Once leaves and moss block a gutter, water spills down the brickwork. Valley and parapet gutters can overflow inside the building, especially near trees.
Here are some of the things we see frequently:
- Lifted, split or missing lead flashings
- Debris building up in roof valleys
- Blocked, sagging or leaking gutters
- Condensation or damp timbers in the loft
If you let a flat or house near High Wycombe station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.

How the survey changes by roof type
Lead flashings and valleys
Many older houses have lead in their valleys and hidden gutters. Worn or split lead lets water straight in, and lead is a target for theft.
Chimney stacks
Our chimney check is a visual inspection of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If a specialist is needed, we will say so.
Wycombe Marsh questions
Is Wycombe Marsh within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Wycombe Marsh?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
When will the report arrive?
Premium reports arrive the same day, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Each report includes photographs.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Typically, if there is one and it can be reached safely. The roof space can show things the outside cannot, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. We check the parts we’re given access to, and the report makes that clear.
How experienced are you?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
Can you look at a roof that is joined to next door?
Yes, we can. We inspect what the owner gives us access to. Where a defect looks to be on the neighbour’s side, the report says so.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.

Wycombe Marsh homes and their roofs
Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Some villages in Buckinghamshire still have thatched roofs. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
If you look after a building such as Marsh School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. For businesses in and around places such as Eden, a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions.

Leave it or get it looked at?
Leaving it means relying on what you can see from the ground. You might pay for work that does not fix the real problem, or miss the fault that matters. We tell you what’s really needed. Outbuildings and barns around Wycombe Marsh are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, from £400 inc. VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What we do, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It usually takes about one to two hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. Rural addresses near Wycombe Marsh can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start with the property details and any concerns.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- Outside, we inspect from ground level, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
- Inside, we check the loft space where there’s safe access.
- We email a report with photographs and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
