Most policies do not cover wear and tear. That makes the difference between storm damage and old wear important. We note signs of each: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We give an honest view of what we see. Your insurer then decides how its policy applies. We survey slate and tile slopes, ridges and hips and gutters and fascias, and common reasons people get in touch are stains appearing after strong winds and loose or torn flashings.

London’s Victorian and Edwardian roofs have often been repaired many times. Insurers typically exclude wear and tear, so it helps to know whether damage is old or new. A careful look in Connaught Village tells the two apart where the evidence allows. Photos and a written account give you something specific to show an insurer, a landlord or a roofer.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What a survey costs

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:

  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Height and safe access
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

What to let us know when you contact us

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • What made you get in touch
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel

Most bookings start with a short call: ring 07833 053749 or send us an email, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. You will have a price before anything is arranged.

What we do, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. For a visit in Connaught Village, parking and access are the things to plan: let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. On the day, the roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from inside the roof space and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • Let us know about parking near the property

Advice

Storm damage roof reports in Connaught Village: local notes

The wider area around Connaught Village has a long history of building, with Handel Hendrix House about 0.9 miles east. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Welsh slate on Victorian and Edwardian terraces is a familiar sight across inner London. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. Shared chimney stacks, party-wall upstands and lead work come with this kind of house. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.

Take a building like Hampden Gurney CofE Primary School: a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. The streets around a church like Church of St John the Evangelist are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. Homes near green spaces such as Hyde Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

Practical tips

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:

  • Take photos of stains and damp inside
  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
  • Do not go onto the roof to take pictures

After the visit, we write up the report with photographs of each area of damage. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.

Check the roof from the ground after strong winds. With binoculars, you can frequently spot problems without climbing. Don’t go up a ladder to look.

What happens if roof problems are left?

It is useful to get a record soon after the storm, while the damage is fresh. Later weather and temporary repairs can make it harder to see what happened. In Connaught Village, as across London, an overflowing gutter soaks the wall below. A blocked outlet ignored for a winter or two can mean damp walls inside.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Connaught Village

Do you cover Connaught Village?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is my home in Connaught Village listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

How are storm damage reports priced?

Our reports start from £150. Larger roofs are quoted for their size. The report does not include repair costs.

Do you look in the loft space?

Where it’s relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with the building owner or managing agent. Let us know about it as you book and we will plan the survey around it.

Will you deal with the insurance company for me?

No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. Your insurer may appoint its own loss adjuster.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

Start by complaining to the insurer. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that doesn’t resolve it. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Connaught Village

We survey roofs for landlords and agents as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos, useful for planning maintenance.

If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the addresses.

Can I check my roof myself?

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book and it will help the survey.

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
