Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in New Charlton?

In much of London, parking needs planning: a visitor permit or a nearby bay makes the day run more smoothly.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

Each policy has its own definition. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but check your own wording.

Do I need to be at home?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We will talk about access when booking.

Do you look in the roof space?

Where it’s relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

How much is a storm damage roof report?

A storm damage report starts from £150. Larger roofs are quoted for their size. Repair costs are not part of the report.

Storm damage roof report in New Charlton

Our storm damage report gives you an independent, written record of how a storm has affected your roof. We record each area of damage, photograph it and note the likely cause. It is yours to pass to your insurer. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We’re not loss adjusters, and we can’t tell you whether a claim will succeed. We survey gutters and fascias, flat roofs and ridges and hips, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are gaps where slates or tiles have gone and ridge tiles that have come loose.

Water getting into a London home frequently comes from a detail you can’t see from the street: a butterfly roof’s central valley gutter, a parapet gutter, a chimney flashing or a flat roof over a back addition. For a leak or storm damage in New Charlton, those hidden details are where the inspection begins. A hidden gutter that overflows can send water a long way before it shows.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How it works

On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. After that, we check everything we can see safely. Most surveys take between one and two hours for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. From the street, a London terrace usually shows only its front slope or parapet, so in New Charlton we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. If other people live in the building, tell us who can let us into the shared parts.

  1. First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there is access.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

Roof by roof

Chimney stacks

Wind can pull the flashings away from a chimney. Loose flashings are recorded.

Clay and concrete tiles

Tiles can lift, crack or blow off in high winds. The report shows each damaged area.

Why get it checked now?

The sooner the damage is recorded, the clearer the evidence. Further storms and quick fixes can make the picture less clear. In New Charlton, as across London, an overflowing gutter soaks the wall below. A blocked outlet ignored for a winter or two can mean damp walls inside.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You will know the figure before booking.

Why us?

  • Visits on any day of the week
  • 98% of clients satisfied
  • Over 5,000 surveys carried out
  • Drone and thermal imaging surveys available

Leaks and storm damage in New Charlton

The wider area around New Charlton has a long history of building, with Queen's House about 1.8 miles west. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Inner London’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces frequently have Welsh slate roofs. From the street you may see only a parapet, with a butterfly roof and a valley gutter behind it draining to the back. Lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are typical of these houses, if yours is one of them. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.

Homes near green spaces like Thames Barrier Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn. Landlords with a home close to Charlton station may find that tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. For businesses in and around places like Gallions Reach Shopping Park, a leak can close part of a shop or office, so finding the cause quickly matters.

Checking the roof from the ground

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Tips that help

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • Keep receipts for any emergency work
  • Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
  • Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Read your policy wording on storm damage

If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. They can damage the roof in high winds.

How we price storm damage roof reports

We confirm the price for your survey before booking. This is what makes a difference:

  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • The size of the roof

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them

Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
