About our thermal roof survey in New Charlton

A thermal survey isn’t a quick fix for every roof problem. Sun, shade, reflective surfaces and wind can all change what the camera shows. We back up the images with moisture readings and a careful look at the roof. The report is clear about what the images show and what they do not. Where something cannot be confirmed, we say what would help next. If you’re worried about patches of heat loss across the roof and gaps in loft insulation, we can find out what’s behind it.

Many London roofs are hidden from the pavement: valley gutters behind parapets, dormers and flat-roofed rear additions. That is where a view from the air or a thermal camera helps, by showing what cannot be reached safely. The weather decides the day: both drones and thermal cameras need the right conditions. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, each with a short note and a photograph. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

New Charlton questions

Is drone flying allowed in New Charlton?

Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. The flight restriction zone around London City Airport covers New Charlton, or comes right up to its edge. Before any flight there, we ask the airport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it’s given. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in New Charlton?

It can be, so it helps to let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space when booking. The visit is then planned around what’s available.

Do you cover New Charlton?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, New Charlton included.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days as you book.

Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?

It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a same-day report.

Do I need to be at home?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you as you book.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Airspace, weather and New Charlton roofs

The wider area around New Charlton has a long history of building, with Queen's House about 1.8 miles west. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years. The flight restriction zone around London City Airport covers New Charlton, or comes right up to its edge. If the drone is used for your survey, we ask the airport for permission first, and only fly if it’s given.

New Charlton is in London, so parking needs planning: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space as you book. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Catherine Labouré, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Surveys for landlords and agents in New Charlton

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Bigger roofs take more time, and they’re priced for the size.

An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord, and the report can go to both. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

Common roof problems in New Charlton

Building owners and managing agents use thermal surveys to plan work on larger flat roofs. It can suggest which areas may be wet and which seem dry, so moisture readings can be targeted.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Leaks far from where the stain appears
  • Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
  • Stains that keep coming back
  • Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions

If you look after a building such as Royal Greenwich Trust School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.

What to expect from a roof survey

How it works

You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll take it from there. The survey itself takes about one to two hours for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so in New Charlton we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. If other people live in the building, let us know who can let us into the shared parts.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.

Practical tips

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:

  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Leave the roof to people with safe access
  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Check outlets after heavy rain

Premium Surveys include an in-person consultation, giving you the chance to talk through the images and findings. A follow-up 12 months later is included as well.

Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Gaps often appear after work in the loft.

How the survey changes by roof type

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Junctions where roofs meet walls, parapets and valleys are common places for water to get in. The camera can help show damp around these junctions.

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Felt and asphalt sit tight to the layers below, which often helps the camera pick up differences. Any patterns are checked with moisture readings.

Why it is worth a survey now in New Charlton

Before replacing a large flat roof, it helps to know how much of it is actually wet. Images backed by moisture readings show where problems seem to be before you commit. Work on a London roof is rarely simple to arrange, with parking, neighbours and access all to think about. Knowing what’s needed early gives you time to plan it calmly, rather than in a rush after a leak.
