Storm damage roof reports near Newdigate

Storm damage roof report in Newdigate

After a storm, safety comes first. Photograph the damage from ground level or a window, and never climb up. Emergency temporary protection, such as covering an opening, is a job for a roofer. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. Common reasons to book are lead lifted at abutments and slipped or missing slates or tiles, on gutters and fascias, ridges and hips and flashings.

Roofs in small places like Newdigate often stand in the open, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

What we’re asked to look at in Newdigate

A storm frequently finds a roof’s existing weak spots. Corroded nails on slate roofs, worn mortar on ridges and old flashings can all give way. We record recent damage alongside older defects.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • Gutters pulled loose in the wind
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Damaged flat roof membrane

Landlords with a home close to Holmwood station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • What exactly goes into their report
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • How soon the report will arrive

What to expect from a roof survey

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Newdigate: your questions answered

Is Newdigate within the area you cover?

Yes, Newdigate is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Newdigate?

Yes, Newdigate is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

Will you check the loft?

Normally, if there is one and it can be reached safely. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in; we will agree the details when booking.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. Take photos from ground level first if it’s safe. Keep receipts for any emergency work.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

What we do, step by step

The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It typically takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Around Newdigate, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

How to prepare

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Let us know about parking before the day
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Landlords, agents and block managers in Newdigate

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed in advance. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which can make access easier.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Pots, cowls and aerials on chimneys can be damaged or dislodged in a storm. The report notes any damage to the stack.

Clay and concrete tiles

Broken or missing tiles leave the underlay exposed to rain. Each gap is recorded with a photo.

Newdigate roofs and the weather

Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls are typical of Surrey’s older houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.

Anyone responsible for a site like Newdigate CofE Endowed Aided Infant School will know that a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Peter, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.
