Storm damage roof report in Stepney
The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: whether there were storm conditions around the date, whether the damage fits a storm, and whether the storm was the main cause. We record what the roof shows about the damage and its likely cause. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. We survey ridges and hips, chimney stacks and flat roofs, and people most frequently book us about gutters pulled loose in the wind and damaged ridges and hips.
London’s Victorian and Edwardian roofs have often been repaired many times. Telling wear from a one-off event matters, because insurers typically exclude wear and tear. That’s as true in Stepney as anywhere in London. Photographs and a written account give you something specific to show an insurer, a landlord or a roofer.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible, with the urgent items made clear.

What we look for on each type of roof
Lead flashings
When flashings lift, water can get behind them. The report records the flashing and any damp inside.
Clay and concrete tiles
A missing tile lets rain reach the underlay. Each gap is recorded with a photo.

DIY checks: what’s safe
It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
What a storm damage roof report looks like in Stepney
Many homes in inner London are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, often with Welsh slate roofs. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. If your home in Stepney is one of them, lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are part of the picture too. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed. The wider area around Stepney has a long history of building, with Mansion House about 1.7 miles west. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you own a rental within reach of Whitechapel station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. Trees in and around Stepney Green Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. If you run a business near Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, finding where water is getting in quickly keeps disruption down.

Prices for storm damage roof reports in Stepney
All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- Height and safe access
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Our price is from £150, including VAT.
Helping us price your survey
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- What made you get in touch
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- The property’s address and postcode
Once you know what you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date.
The survey, step by step
We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit normally takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. From the street, a London terrace usually shows only its front slope or parapet, so a visit in Stepney moves between viewpoints: the pavement, upstairs windows, the loft and any safe spot at the back. Shared stairs or a basement flat? Tell us who holds the keys.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- We look at the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- We record and photograph the damage.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

How to book
A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll ask a few questions about the roof. You will have a price before anything is arranged.
Advice
Leave it or get it looked at?
If the damage is partly wear and tear, it’s better to know. Our report gives an honest view of both, so you know what the roof shows. Blocked gutters and hoppers on London houses overflow and soak brickwork, which can lead to damp inside. A small blockage left for a few winters becomes a damp problem.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

Stepney questions
Is my home in Stepney listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you cover Stepney?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and Stepney is part of that. You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
What does a storm damage report cost?
Our reports start from £150. Larger roofs are quoted for their size. Repair costs aren’t part of the report.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll plan the survey around it.
How experienced are you?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
What if the roof was already worn?
Wear and tear is typically excluded from home insurance. Our report records storm damage and any older wear we see, so you know what the roof shows. Your insurer decides how its policy applies.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Usually, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. The roof space can show things the outside cannot, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.
