Storm damage roof report in Whetsted: what you get
Wear and tear is typically excluded from home insurance. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. Our report records both: fresh breaks and recently moved slates or tiles, and older problems like corroded nails or worn mortar. We give an honest view of what we see. Your insurer then decides how its policy applies. We survey ridges and hips, flashings and slate and tile slopes, and people most frequently book us about gaps where slates or tiles have gone and new damp or leaks inside.
Many homes in small places like Whetsted face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Roof by roof
Lead flashings
Wind can peel back flashings at abutments and stacks. Loose or damaged flashings are photographed and noted.
Ridge and hip tiles
A lifted ridge tile can let water into the roof. Each one is recorded with photos.
The survey, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Older roofs in small places like Whetsted can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- You get a written report to pass to your insurer.
Before the survey
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Storm damage roof reports in Whetsted: local notes
Across Kent, older roofs are often handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. You’ll also find oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses among the county’s older buildings. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand.
If you live in an older home near Five Oak Green Church, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Paddock Wood Primary School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back. If you let a flat or house near Paddock Wood station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.

Before and after the survey
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:
- Check your policy for how to report damage
- Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
- Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
- Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
If a claim is declined and you disagree, the first step is a complaint to the insurer. If that does not resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.
Keep records of roof work and surveys. They can help show the roof was looked after.
Whetsted questions
Will you come out to Whetsted?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Is Whetsted in the area you cover?
Yes, Whetsted is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Whetsted as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How are storm damage reports priced?
Our reports start from £150. Larger roofs are quoted for their size. The report does not include repair costs.
Can I challenge a declined storm claim?
The first step is a complaint to your insurer. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, though we cannot predict the outcome.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll explain what’s needed.
Is wear and tear covered by insurance?
Insurers normally exclude wear and tear. We describe what looks like fresh storm damage and what looks older. Your insurer decides the claim.
