Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Anthill Common
Once a leak has been fixed, people frequently ask whether the roof is still wet. A thermal survey with moisture readings can show whether wet areas remain, given suitable conditions on the day.
Problems we come across often include:
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
Around Anthill Common, as everywhere, small roof faults are simplest to sort before they let water in.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
Thermal roof survey in Anthill Common
Thermal imaging is part of our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. It also includes a drone inspection where it applies, a structural analysis and a same-day report. An in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up are included too. To book, just ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and what you’ve noticed. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size. If you’ve noticed damp that repairs haven’t cured and leaks far from where the stain appears, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on commercial roofs, flat roofs and pitched roof slopes alike.
Villages like Anthill Common often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Airspace, weather and Anthill Common roofs
The coast is about 5 miles or less from Anthill Common, and coastal wind can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
Take an older house close to Church of All Saints: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Honest limits
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
- Proving moisture from the images alone
If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.
What we look at
- Insulated roof spaces
- Flat roofs
- Loft conversions
- Ceilings below the roof
- Commercial roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
How we price thermal roof surveys
We confirm the price for your survey before booking. These are the things that affect it:
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can be seen safely and the package you choose.
What to tell us when you contact us
A little information up front helps. Please include:
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
If you are buying, it’s useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just phone 07833 053749 or email us when you are ready.
What we look for on each type of roof
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. Thermal imaging can suggest where that may be happening.
Loft insulation
In the loft space, the camera can pick up gaps and thin areas of insulation. We inspect the loft where it can be reached safely.
Before and after the survey
Small things make a difference. Our tips:
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Leave the roof to people with safe access
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
If the images suggest moisture that can’t be confirmed, we will say what would help next, for instance electronic leak detection or a roofer opening up a small section.
Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
What we do, step by step
We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit typically takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Rural addresses near Anthill Common can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Before the survey
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Check we can get to the back of the property

Questions from Anthill Common
Is Anthill Common in the area you cover?
Yes, Anthill Common is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Anthill Common as anywhere else.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Anthill Common?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. We explain what the images can and cannot tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
What happens after the survey?
You will get the report by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Can you do a thermal survey in any weather?
The weather makes a real difference. It works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind. Rain, wind and heavy cloud can weaken the patterns, so we talk through the forecast when you book.
How quickly is the report sent?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.
